    Wetting The Bed

I have a 4 year old dcb who comes to me every day. He has been potty trained for at least 2 years, and is extremely smart.

His dad asked me earlier this week what to do about him wetting the bed EVERY single night. I told him all I had ever heard was to make them go potty right before bed, and make sure they don't get anything to drink before bed, but that I would research it and let him know what I learned.

Well, dcd says they make him potty every night before bed, but they aren't going to make him NOT take a drink if he's thirsty. And every single night, he wets the bed.

He has started doing the same thing at naptime with me. We eat lunch at 12, and nap is at 1:30. He doesn't have anything to drink between those times, and he pees right before bed EVERY day.

I did some research online and people have said pull-ups at nap/bedtime. Dcd and I talked about this, and he says pull-ups are just diapers, and may make him regress even while he's awake.

Dcb gets VERY embarrassed when he does it at daycare, and dcd says he cries when he does it at home.

Any suggestions/advice for this dcd, dcb, and myself?

    Thanks

Both my dad and my brother wet the bed until they were 12 years old. Tell dcd to take his son to the doctor. Some ppl just cannot control their bladder at night. And yes pull ups, unless he wants to throw out the bed! Gross!

Here is some really good info on night time bed wetting.

I guess wetting the bed at night is a whole different ball game then toilet training issues.

Today is my son's 7th birthday, and he still wets the bed at night. It is VERY frustrating. I can have him not have any drinks after 6:30 (after dinner) and he goes to bed around 9. He goes to the bathroom twice before he goes to bed. Once before he starts to get ready and once just before he climbs into bed. Even with all of this, he still wets the bed. He has a small bladder AND he is a sound sleeper. Between the two there is nothing we can really do other than have him wear pull-ups or a diaper or whatever. He's skinny so we can get by with a size 5 or 6 diaper, which is cheaper than the bedtime shorts for the older kids. About once a week he'll wake up dry in the morning.

Our pediatrician is aware and assures us that he will grow out of it.
Give a little love to a child, and you get a great deal back.

I thought there was something wrong with my DD5 because she still needs a pull-up at night. She pees EVERY night! But when I took her to the doctor for her well-child check, the dr. told me that it is perfectly normal for a child up to even age 7 or 8 to have weak bladder control during the night. She is completely potty trained and has been for a few years now, but she just can't wake herself up to go to the bathroom in the night. Pull-ups are no big deal at night.

My 17 yr old wet til she was 6. We would make her stop and start peeing mid stream during the day, also nothing after 7 pm to drink. I also pottied her when I went to bed, about 1130 pm. And again when I woke around 4am. It helped. Time, will help. As frustrating as it sounds. I'd suggest dad talk to doc. Just as precaution but also try the other suggestions.

I would say put him in pull ups every night to go bed unless the parents can buy mattress waterproof pad in his bed. The parents probably would have to wash the sheets every day, it is up to them.

Awwww! So sad that he cries about it. Some kids get really upset over it. I'm gonna guess that maybe he just has a weak bladder and it may take him some time to grow out of it. Hopefully not 12 or an age where it will be super embarrassing for him.

Maybe they can try the "pull ups" that are like underwear...maybe the GoodNites that everyone is talking about. Pull-ups...probably not. I kinda feel like it's regressing too. Maybe you could try something else first. Good luck!

DS is almost 7 and still wets every night. He wears GoodNites to bed. It's more of a big kid pull up. They tend to cut down on the smell. Pull ups didn't have enough absorption. Our ped. won't "treat" night time wetness til 7 at the earliest. She said it's normal. My brother had issues til he was at least 10.

If dcb is upset about it, then for his emotional well being, dcd should really think hard about the pull ups at home. As far as nap, I would require a pull up for the time being, but I would tell dcd that pull ups can stop when he's dry for x amount of days. You could also have him keep his underwear on under the pull up if that would make dcd feel better. Til you get dcd on board, give dcb a little extra TLC. Poor guy!

As others have said, this is very common.

30 yrs ago, 2 different urologists told me it was because I pottie trained my daughters too early.

Should you decide to use the GoodNites, help the child put them on descretely so that no one else knows. That will help a little bit with his embarassment.

Thank you all so so much. I will be talking to dcd on Monday! (dcm is in the picture too, by the way, she just doesn't mention it...)

Basically, dcb, dcd, dcm, and little brother sleep together every night, and I'm sure the wetting the bed situation is uncomfortable for them all... However, to each his own, and if they want pee on them every night instead of using pull-ups, so be it.

I will definitely mention the GoodNites though, because they DO look more like underwear, don't they??

Many moons ago I used to babysit a little boy that had the same problem. I'd put him to bed at 8:00-9:00 ( I can't remember exactly because it was so long ago ) and I used to get him up and walk him still sleeping to the bathroom around 11:00. It worked about 80% of the time.

Some children are just such sound sleepers that it just happens. If the child is crying over it at home then he's embarassed or is being scolded about it. This isn't going to help the situation.

We've had 5 year olds wear pull ups at naptime. They are old enough to go to the bathroom and while they are in there they put them on themselves. Make sure parents send them in something like sweats - easy on/easy off. After naptime they take them off. I have even had them wear underwear over the pull ups so that they can pull them down and pop off the pull up - easy peasy. It doesn't have to be such a big deal.

Our one little boy was so conscious of it that he would only drink half of his juice at lunch and then he got the rest at snacktime after nap. HE wanted to stop it and this is the point you want to get to.

Honestly, the only reason GoodNites look more like underwear is because they have a pattern printed on them that looks like underwear. Otherwise, they feel, sound (you can hear it when they walk), and function just like a pull up. However, they do not have the sides that you can refasten like a pull up does. I think they are more expensive than pull ups though. Not completely sure because I haven't had to buy pull ups in a long time and we always bought Target brand.

My Son is 8 and still wets the bed I have a waterproof mattress protector on his bed and he wears goodnights they arent diapers they are EXTRA padded undies for bed time we dont make a big deal out of it I buy the goodnights put them in his underwear draw he puts them on before bed and throws them away in the morning. Doc says it could be due to his ADHD or he is just a deep sleeper and either way he will most likely stop by the time he hits puberty. This little Boy probably feels bad about it because his parents are embrassed by it and make a big deal about it tell them to get the kid some goodnights and dont make it such a big issue.

You should pass along this website for the parents. http://goodnites.com/

It has helpful advice and coupons were available. I just called Target here and they have a 13 pack for 9.49 or the largest pack is a 36 pack for 19.99. I would tell the parents they should schedule an appointment with the dr. just so they get the most up-to-date information and are reassured it's normal. My older sister wet the bed until she entered middle school......she never had sleep overs! You could tell them they should wake their son during the middle of the night to go the bathroom as that might help. Of course, limiting how much they drink before bed. Ex. drink a glass at dinner at 5/6 and if they're still thirty they can have half a glass of water later. Trial and Error, goal is to help the child cope and not be embarassed.
