    Diaper Rash :(

Okay, so I have this DCB who is just over 1 and constantly has diaper rash... And extreme diaper rash, talking about raw, bleeding painful diaper rash. Mum insists that Vaseline will do the trick- but it is in my opinion that Vaseline will make it worse as it traps everything in and won't let air flow to the behind, Vaseline should only be used as a barrier cream to prevent not to treat ( am I wrong on this)
I work so hard all week trying to stop the diaper rash and bam on Mondays it is back or even the next day I leave him with out diaper as much as I can, apply cream, change very frequently... Sometimes he won't complain if he is dirty and he doesn't have a strong odor but I do check him every 30 mins

I feel like Mum places blame on me- however, none of my other children in care have ever gotten it, and before sending him home he is okay just slightly red, I guess I need to confirm each morning if the rash is there and physically check.
Also this little guy has very sensitive skin, eczema, heat rash ect
Any advice on what to do??

He could be allergic to the diapers! My niece and nephew both couldn't wear Huggies because it would do the same thing to them!

It could also be a yeast infection if it's not clearing up.

Urge DCM to take DCB to the doctor for the conditions and ask if it's either of these.

I would change in front of mom each day at drop off. vaseline seals and protects, will not allow air to circulate. you need a zinc cream or plain yogurt

Thanks all I will read the links at nap time!
My hubby thinks it is neglect on DCM behalf and I should report it?? I think that may be taking it a little far but he has had diaper rash on and off for the past 7 months

It could be neglect but it could also be WAY too much juice and acidic fruits in the diet, too.

Try rinsing with baking soda water at all diaper changes (after wiping away all particulate matter) and blot dry with a paper towel. (leaving residue on skin)

If it stops it within days, that is your most likely culprit.

IMHO, It is best to tread lightly until you are sure..

the thing about reporting is that there is always a possibility that a child would be taken away and put into foster care. Does a diaper rash really warrant a call to CPS if this child is cared for in every other way? It is very possible that she is just uninformed and feels this is normal. If it is very serious and he is in pain, then I would print out some information for her, talk to her again and suggest she see her ped for a long term solution. It could be something like an allergy to whatever he's eating. If you don't suspect any other mistreatment, please don't waste CPS time for this call. There are kids out there in severe abuse and living with drug addict parents that need the resources more.

I was told when my daughter had diaper rash to put on the diaper cream (whatever store brand we used) THEN if I wanted to vaseline to lock it in. Never used the vaseline, just the store bought (sometimes medicated from the doc if it was real bad) and it always cleared up!

Sounds like it's Mom not applying the correct treatment to me...I'm not sure I'd report her since she does put on something...maybe look it up online and see if there are any articles you can show her about what works and what does not? I know she may not take to kindly to sooo much advice when she has her mind made up, but it's worth a shot!

If mom thinks the Vaseline will help and blames you for the rash getting worse B/C you are not using ask Mom to show you how she applies and then do that one of 3 things will happen 1. nothing everything will be the same in regards to the child rash no real harm. 2. The rash gets even worse then you can ask mom what she would like to do B/C the rash appears to be getting worse. 3. the rash gets better great for the child.

You are right- I wouldn't call unless I saw other signs- it was just my husbands added two cents when I showed him the rash- he almost fell over!
He constantly shows up in overnight diapers.. And I am thinking they might be the cause or the parents use them so they don't change as frequently ( this is all subjective- which I know I shouldn't do)
Anyway, I am telling Mum a trip to the Doctor is needed- I can't have him in pain all day and don't have resources to help him and health codes I can't have him with out a diaper.also, In Ontario I have to have written permission to use any medical ointment and signed permission before I put ANYTHING on his bottom.. So hopefully the Doctor will help out and it will sink in better... I also suggested it could be a food allergy and we need to get to the bottom of it ASAP it's not fair for him

I have always used cornstarch. Never fails. No baby powder or butt creams. Just plain old cornstarch and nothing else. Use it at every diaper change. I promise you if it is not a yeast infection, it will help clear the rash very soon.

I feel for you. Here's what my pediatrician recommends:

                          1. Allow the diaper rash area to completly air dry on its own at every diaper change. Use papers to flap dry it if you need to.
                          2. Use diaper rash cream as the base layer.
                          3. Use diaper cream or Vasoline as layer on top of the diaper rash cream.
                          4. Keep child out of diaper as much as possible to allow area to dry.

                            Juice

Dont serve him any juice!! It causes diaper rash. and no refined sugar! read labels.

You KNOW Mom isn't going to tell the Dr. that he's had diaper rash off and on for 7 months. Hopefully she'll tell the Dr. that she uses Vaseline on his bottom and he/she'll set her straight.

Since the corn starch isn't a "medical ointment", I'd give it a try -sparingly at first to see if he reacts at all.

And why is he showing up unchanged from bedtime? He must smell horrid when he gets there. Poor thing.
