I got so tired of getting doctors notes saying the child was okay to return to daycare that I changed my policy to this:

A note from your physician STATING YOUR CHILD'S DIAGNOSIS is required to return to daycare. It will then be at the discretion of the provider to determine if you child is able to return to daycare.

Parent's have it too easy today...they take a kid to the doctor and they say they need a note for their child to return to daycare. BAM...doctor writes a note. It doesn't say whether he is ill, infected or contagious. It should be up to US to decide whether we want the child there or not. If they can not function for the duration they need to be in care, they should not attend. Some of these parents need to take the responsibility to stay home with their sick babies.

I always tell prospective clients off the bat that they need to have job flexibility and staying home with a sick one is sometimes the best medicine.

At first they were completely blaming it on the bio dad with the scheduling so I was understanding but I've since realized that it's simply not the case.

For all your entertainment purposes (since I know we all love parents who pawn kids off) This is my favorite from them....

me: How was your do this weekend?
them: good we went to a concert and tailgated all day
me: man, that's awesome, it's so hard for me to find someone who is willing to babsit on weekends that I trust, I only trust maybe 2 people with my kids
them: oh yah I know but we've known kara, or is it krystal? anyways we've known her for a long time. Oh it's katelyn, that's right. We completely trust her.....

In NJ and Im sure where you are too, its not up to YOU to say when a child is well, the state says so. I guess its up to the provider to enforce, which Im not as good at! Blame it on the licensing agency, because you would get into trouble if they showed up and had a sick kid. anyway, how does your policy go regarding absence? If I am open everyone pays! Not my fault your child is sick! and the ones who come sick are the first ones to complain if they see another child sneeze!

          Update

So apparently saturday they ended up having to take dcg to the emergency room and was diagnosed with croup. They brought her this morning and ON fever reducer (which I was told intially that she did not have any) her fever was 100.5. I did not find out that she was on reducer until I called to make sure the tylenol would be ok and they told me no because she had just given it to her 45 minutes earlier. This baby was so miserable that she couldn't even cry. I even asked dcm if she had an ear infection before she even left from dropping off because she kept digging at her ear and the dcm said no but then later I was told when I called to say she was doing horribly that the doctor wanted a follow up visit today because the ear was red. So currently they are at the doctor ((thank God!!))

The SAME family, the bio dad for their oldest dropped off and said he will pick up dcb at 3 tommorrow. Tommorrow is not a scheduled day for this kid but he said that the dcm said it was already set. I did not get paid for this day and even confirmed this morning when they handed me the check the days for the week.

          I am SO annoyed!

I have this in my handbook too! Just because the doc says yes, doesn't trump the fact that it's YOUR home and YOUR business. Many times the doc will just write a note to make the parent happy. They don't care if all the kids at your day care get sick (heck...it's job security for them!)

                Caught in yet ANOTHER lie!

So all this time everytime I talk to dcd he's been sticking to this dcg "got 4 steroid shots" this weekend at ER. I didn't believe it at all so I just kind of made it into a big deal as I can't believe they would give a sick baby 4 shots of anything let alone steroids. So I just kept asking about it. He went into location of shots and even that him and his wife both dcg down to get them as well as that "she was like iron man lifting everything up afterwards"

I almost LOL'd when he told me that!

Anyways, dcm came in to pick up the other two kids and was talking about how pitiful dcg was at the er and mentioned that they gave her an oral steroid.... NOT the shot steroids like the other parent said.

                WHAT is wrong with people!?!?!?!?!?!!

Anyways, I guess we'll see how today goes... no doubt they will try to bring her again. Gosh I REALLY can't lose this income over their stupidity!!!!!

Are these the only children you are watching?

The child went home with a fever yesterday - she should not be returning today. Do you have a Doctor's note stating it's the croup? It could be RSV and the way these people habitually lie to you, it very well could be.

Do not let these people risk the health of the other children you are watching.

Croup is an upper respiratory tract viral infection that causes a barking cough. Children under 3 years of age are most likely to get croup. Read about symptoms, treatment, contagious, and prevention.

"Because most croup is caused by viral infections"
                  "Croup Causes

Croup is most commonly caused by a viral respiratory infection that is easily passed among children. Common viral causes include parainfluenza, influenza, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and rhinovirus."

Just curious - are the parents smokers?

No I watch other kids as well, I just told the parents the child would be completely isolated so I wouldn't get the others sick. I mean I basically said he will be in a pack n play in a room by herself if you bring her and they were totally fine with it.... although I wasn't. I do not have a policy on sick as of now... although after this that will be changing. So basically it's like I'm making up rules as I go at this point. I finally put a cap on fever of 101 so that I had some kind of guideline. My secret weapon is that I go to the same pediatrician's office as them and I'm personal friends with their nurse so as much as she can tell me she has. She's on antibiotics now for a sinus infection on top of the pink eye and croup and feels tons better today although we are still isolating.

They are not smokers (that I know of) however, I've been to their house and it is super dirty so it would not surprise me if that has something to do with it. The kids are often not bathed (I'll fix the middle daughters hair and it will be the same the next day and it will continue through the entire week so I have to brush her hair every morning when she arrives) This morning the same one who's sick was poopy when she arrived. I thought it was odd when the dcd was holding onto her longer than usual (he usually throws her over as soon as he gets inside but this time walked all the way in my family room which is through 3 other rooms to set her down). The middle one has even arrived with dried poop on her hand and as soon as walking in my house was crying asking me to get it off.

Basically, I love these kids and I can tell they do not get the adequate amount of attention or care at home so I feel like I need to step in and be that care and attention for them. That's why I put up with the parents. I mean the non-attention was obvious when dcd was more mad that he was going to pay me when he had to keep his kid home then he was upset she had pink eye.

More power to ya hon - you're a saint.

Get that policy on illness going pronto.

Please don't pester your friend at the Dr's. office for information. That's a privacy right infringement and she could be fired for that. (And charged in court)

not pestering at all and she was actually a friend before a nurse, and she didn't give out any information other than what a doctor would advise to parents in that situation (like I asked if they would say they could go back to daycare after less than 12 hours on antibiotics.) Nothing specific, I didn't even give out a name as that would be releasing information on my end too
