    Advice Please...Naptime Wetter

I have a dcb...turned 3 in October. He wets his cot at least once a week and has done so since he's been here. When he was first enrolled his mom brought me some (huge) Goodnites-type pants (he's too big for Pull-Ups) for him to wear at naptime.

I am not a fan of Pull-Ups at naptime or any other time for a "potty-trained" child.... to me it gives the message of "its okay to pee on myself as long as I'm wearing a diaper". Plus I'm usually the only one in the room with 8-12 kids, naptime is already hectic enough...without having to undress a 50 pound 3 year old, put the Goodnites thing on him and redress him...then do it again in 2 hours.

So...my alternative is I wake them up half-way through nap to use the potty. I sometimes have to carry them to the potty and help them use it. It gets their bladders into the routine of holding it til he/she gets to the potty, and it reinforces "I dont pee on myself at any time". I usually dont have to do this for more than 2 weeks...I start waiting later and later to wake them until its phased out...its worked for EVERY other kid I've potty trained.

I know everything doesnt work for every kid...but this guy's body doesn't seem to be catching on...I can wake up to go at 2 pm every for two weeks...the first day I wait til 2:10...he's wet himself. He's been here for almost 6 months...and been "potty trained" for longer.

What can I do....short of slamming him back in pull-ups...I really dont want to do that...

They have to wear a diaper at nap here until they are dry for one month straight.

I've had a number of kids who went past three in nap diapers. They sleep like rocks here so some kids just don't stay dry until they are older.

ditto.... I have kids that just turned 3 and are in pull-ups or diapers (what ever the parents supply) at nap time only. I have taught them to change into their pull-up before and after naps. They all can do it on their own.

So I should ask the mom to start sending weekly Goodnites again? She hasnt sent any since like Halloween...I'm a little hesitant to ask her...but she's probably sick of getting bags of wet clothes home twice a week, too.

I dont know....I guess thats what it has to be because my method isnt working. It just seems like it'll go on forever....

I would go with the goodnights...however, if you haven't tried this you might give it a try...

After lunch we go potty, then we do outside for a little bit, then we go potty, then we have story and go to bed.

I have found that kids need two things to help them get through nap...adequate time to digest their lunch and more than one potty bread. That said, it still may not work. He may just need the goodnights.

Personally, I do diapers or pull-ups until they are accident free at nap for several days.

i agree with you - i hate pull ups.

BUT there are some kids who have issues with bed wetting until they're much, much older.

i can't remember their exact ages, but i remember my mom complaining and fighting with my stepdad over my stepbrothers wetting the bed i THINK until they were in middle school!

obviously there's no way to say that maybe he's a kid who will have an issue, but if what you usually do isn't working i would probably resort to pull ups/goodnites too.

ALSO try reducing in liquid in-take right before naps and then if allow more liquids after waking. I have a kid that wear pull ups and still mangaes to wet through his clothes daily unless I do this..

It may sound crazy, but i put a puppy pad under the mat of little's who I know have issues with staying dry. I used to have a little boy who would go for months then all of a sudden start waking up wet.

not crazy at all - disposable pads are used on incontinent patients (the nice word for they pee/poop themselves) and they look exactly like puppy pads. it's a good alternative IF the child would actually wake up after feeling he's peed himself. if he sleeps through it anyway, it'd probably just be a waste of money since mom could pay for the pull ups.

have him go potty before nap then after everyone is settled down and before he falls asleep have him go again. Maybe just keep waking him and taking him to the bathroom maybe your about to hit your break through on this one.

I have a 4 year old boy who has been trained for almost 2 years and he wets his pullup almost every naptime. Some kids just take longer before their bodies can wake them up to pee. He wears a pullup at naptime and changes into it himself after he goes potty. Then he takes it off himself when he gets up, throws it out, and goes potty again. He's a big pee-er.

I would just ask for more pullups.

I bet you he's not emptying when he's going to the bathroom. I would get him to go to the bathroom when he's done lunch and just before he goes to sleep. Its a short time inbetween but I have a kid who does this too, and then I find him peeing on the floor.
