I May Have Done My Job Too Well!

I have a special needs DCB that I've worked with for well over a year. Under the guidance of ECI, I have taught him to crawl, walk, run, and even jump. He was non-verbal but is starting to talk, mostly one word, but he makes his needs known. He has a neurological rage disorder that I haven't been able to solve. I planned to try to hang in there until he turns 3 in a few months and goes off to PPCD. Now, his therapist says that I'be done such a good job that unless something else happens, he won't qualify and can stay here another year, "since you are really good with speech issues." Nooooooooo!!! There is a slight chance of a hearing issue that might qualify him, but even in my frustration with his rages, I can't bring myself to wish for that. I've trapped myself.

Hmm, it's time for an excuse. "Oh, I just assumed dcb would qualify, and I've already filled the spot (a year from now :, sorry!"
In all seriousness, great job helping the child!

I might have done OK with the other stuff, but I'm failing the rage issue. I have the head of the Behavior Management clinic at a nearby university on speed dial, and he still bloodied my lip yesterday.

I just realized after reading your comments that I sound like I'm bragging. I'm not, or don't mean to. I am just frustrated over the rages.

I don't see it as bragging at all. I see an amazing person who has way more patience and abilities than I do.

Is the PPCD free in your area? All of my SNK always leave at 3 to go because it's either covered by insurance or free

You weren't bragging you were just sayin' . But if you don't feel you can handle the rages, I would say so and let him go if that was your plan. Sometimes you have done all you can and it is time to let someone else try. You can always state you are doing it for his well being, because if you just can't do it anymore you are.

I want to. But, I'm the only small home provider here. The others have a lot of kids, and the 2 centers don't do therapy. I want him to succeed, I've brought him this far. But there are no options for him in this small town. If I give up, he's out of luck. I was really counting on sending him to school. I'll keep on as long as I can. I just needed to vent after I heard that he won't go yo school.

Daycare, it is free here through the school district on their 3rd birthday.

I also live in a small city and there are not a lot of choices but the school dist or paying out of pocket for therapy that does provide care.

it sounds like you have done an amazing job thus far, but don't give up on trying to have him placed there. It's not easy when you have SNK, especially with rage issues. I don't know how you do it....I don't think I could...

you are a super hero in my eyes and deserve all the rights to brag if you wanted to

Daycare, what I should have said is that it is free if you qualify as needing help with the skills needed for school. Speech doesn't qualify you for a space in the classroom. The speech therapists come to your home or daycare. If you have motor issues or other things that would interfere with your school experience, then you go all day for free. That would be motor, hearing, vision, developmental delays, SPD, ASD.His motor issues are very slight now, he can walk, hold a pencil, etc. Their plan is for him to come here so I can continue working with him on his speech :confused:until he turns 4. He's a smart kid, he can be sweet, great mom, but the rages are exhausting.

wow, ours covers speech. I work with an SLP and she sends me tons of kids. Once they hit 3 they leave me.

                      Interesting how each state differs

Would telling them that after working with him for so long, you feel that he REQUIRES further intervention, even documenting his rage behavior over the course of a few weeks/months.

I would even go so far as to tell dcm that she needs to fight this to get him in. That you have brought him as far as you can, but he needs more help with the rage, more than you feel qualified to give. You have tried for X period of time, and have seen little to no improvement.

He needs to be in a special needs prek with a functional behavioral assessment and behavior therapy. The rage should have decreased as his language and communication skills improved. The fact that it isn't is 'proof' of an ongoing issue.

We know the cause. He is a stroke survivor and brain scans show damage in that part of the brain. We were working with a program through the university, but their funding for outreach ran out. There is no way mom can get him to the clinic. But, bless her heart, the director likes what I'm doing here and gave me her number to call when I need help.

His OT,PT, and speech therapists have witnessed it repeatedly, and it has actually become a big part of our sessions.

Unless he turns it on the other kids, I guess he will stay for now. So far, his aggression toward them is mostly typical 2 year old stuff, easily managed. If that changes, I'll have no choices left.
