    Extended Day Fees

    Question for you all:

My time policy is this: Regular tuition covers up to 10 hours of care per day. Anything beyond 10 hours is considered an extended day and I have an extended day fee of $5 per every half hour past the 10 hour mark. Then at 6:00pm when I close I start charging a late fee of $1 per minute if a child is still here.

I have a DCM who has 10.5 and 11 hour days. She has a schedule and her extended day fees are part of her regular tuition. Now, some days she has been dropping DCK off later resulting in a day that does not go over the 10 hour mark. If you were in my shoes, would you refund her the extended day fee since she did not go over 10 hours? Or would you keep it since her contracted hours are for 10+ hour days and it is her choice if she brings DCK later then normal?

Btw, my policy is you pay 52 weeks per year regardless of attendance.

I am in this situation right now. Dcm is changing up hours and some days dcg is here over 10 hours (I have the same 10 hour policy). Dcm used to use 10.5 to 11 hours every day she was here. Now it is 10 and sometimes 10 hours and 15 minutes.

I let her get away with this because I really like dcm. She often drops off late and picks up early to spend extra time with dcg.

I guess it depends on your relationship with dcm and if you think she will take advantage of you if you don't charge her.

I wouldn't refund. You are available for the contracted hours she chose, if she drops off later, you were still available.

If she will continue to always drop off later, then I would suggest to her that we redo her contract for the new hours that she needs

Since she's contracted for the extended fees I wouldn't refund. Forget the extended part - she's agreed to pay $XXX.XX for XX hours of care, and should't get a refund any more than another parent who pays a lesser amount for fewer hours of care.

I charge based on what the parent schedules NOT what the child uses.

I charge rates based on pick up times (not # of hours used) and do not care when a child is dropped off.. so if a family here used 8-4 on Tuesday but then used 11-4 on Wednesday, the rate would be the same.

My handbook states late drop off does not constitute a later pick up and does not equal a rate reduction.

Yes, if these are contracted times, don't refund. My dcm and I are working out a new contract right now, so I am giving her some leeway that I normally wouldn't. But when she was contracted for 11 hours and she only used 9 or 10, she still paid for 11.

                  This is what I do.

I have a parent who some days will bring dcb for only a few hours and some days for the whole day. I charge her my flat daily rate (he is p/t) and she can choose whether she wants to bring dcb earlier or later.

Thanks ladies! My gut is telling me not to refund, but I wondered what everyone's thoughts were on this.
