I have a child w milk allergy and mom sends me food. I like to cook so I usually try and avoid milk products or make dcg a bowl of pasta instead of what were having for lunch. The mom provides soy milk, dairy free snacks & waffles.

For the pooping issues - it depends on your comfort level and dcbs medical
Condition (is it a lack of control issue, fear of potty issue, etc). Could the dcb clean himself up after an accident, will he tell you about the accident, what is therapy & medicine for, etc.

How much will not being able to go to the park for 3/days out of the week impact your schedule? Do you have the ability to assist a 6 year old going to the potty? Is the potty somewhere close by that you can be within earshot of him & the other dcks?

      All things I was wondering.

It's one thing to be home and have everything you need to clean-up after an accident. But, to be out in a public area and have to clean up a 6 yr. old's poop in a public restroom with other kiddos around me sounds horrible!! It's doable, just not how I envisioned my summer going. I don't expect kids to be perfect, and I realize this is a health issue and the family has taken him to therapy.

... the whole thing just turned me off the family. Also, there was a "I'd be great if you could train DCG soon, she I think if they approached it as a medical issue they're desperately working though instead of "Oh, don't get me started on my 6 yr. old... he's still pooping his pants, ugh!"seems more ready than DCB." Those comments just made my heart hurt for her son. No wonder Oh and the kicker... it says the 18 month old is a biter.

I do think I'll take these kiddo's on, but only on a trial basis. Because on the whole they'll work with my schedule and a trial can't hurt -- 3 days a week only. Maybe they're exaggerating? crossed fingers...

Food issues, I hate cooking. I am not a good cook at all. This kid may have to bring their own food. I serve a lot of quesedillas, mac n cheese, pizza, and I'm afraid I'll be doing special every meal to accommodate the no milk or cheese. I'll talk to them to find out if cooking with it is okay.

See...now that makes me think the whole thing is a power-struggle that they are blowing up.

He may not do it at all with you. He may, and then he should have a natural consequence; you cannot play with soiled pants, so go change. Matter-of-fact.

          Really? Wow!

In most school systems around here, even severely disabled children are mainstreamed as much as possible. A kindergartner who still has accidents? Not really "special needs", IMO. Unpleasant, yes!

            This is what I'm wondering.....

Maybe the child has poop issues because he IS lactose intolerant but the parents don't feed him correctly? Which has maybe led to constipation and stool holding.

            Just a thought.

As far as medication for poop issues? They are referring to laxatives I assume? They would need to do a bowel program that doesn't include sending the child to me after getting a laxative especially if they are only coming to daycare 3 days a week.

It's doable but I would be very clear with parents on what I expected from them and be sure they understand what a trial is and why and about deposits related to a trial.

Also, discuss yur biting policy as well.

Ikr! Here, special needs kids spend time in mainstream classrooms and in their own classrooms. But teachers with 18 5 year olds can't be expected to leave the entire class to clean up the poop of one child. The mom of the dcg5 I was talking about was highly offended and I was like, lady, your kid is 5 and pooping on herself. What do you expect??
