So this family that suddenly has been having issues following policies sent their 2 month old baby here today after she apparently didn't eat all weekend and slept all weekend. Of course dcd didn't mention this at drop off but said that she's been coughing so bad that she's been coughing up all her milk. Shortly after he left I put her down for a nap and she hasn't been up since. I got worried and offered her bottles at the usual times and her diaper has remained dry. If I try to wake her she'll scream and fall back to sleep mid screaming. She'll cough sometimes and that will wake her up long enough to scream in pain.

So I called dcm and she said this has been going on a weekend and she figured it was the remnants of the flu but she said she couldn't leave work since she wants to save her time off but promised to bring baby to the ER after work. I said no...if she doesn't come then I'm calling dcd now.

I just feel bad for baby and worry I'm over thinking this. But this baby's sister has a confirmed case of the flu...and my policy says if a baby won't eat and is acting lethargic then they must go home...

No. Still waiting. Tempted to have term papers ready if they wait until their usual pick up time to get her (which is in 3 hours). Clearly she knows something is up and tried to slip by if she said she wants to take her to ER...but why wait?

You are not over thinking this-I can't believe they were not more concerned and they even brought her after she didn't eat all weekend! Dehydration would be a huge concern!!

Is there anyway you can slip the bottle into the babies mouth while she is sleeping and get her to take a little? She's gonna go downhill fast with NO fluid.

I tried that multiple times...each time she woke up and flipped out. She sounds so congested that I'm afraid she'll inhale the milk. I'm so mad that I took her today...she didn't seem abnormal when she was initially dropped off.

Finally got a text from dcd...he's on his way. Finally.

Dcd picked her up and is taking her to the dr. Not sure what I should do about tomorrow. Waiting to see what dcd says about the dr visit.

Due to the severity of the Flu, I require ALL family members and siblings to be excluded if anyone in the house has the flu.

Colds and other common illnesses are okay and not something I exclude the whole family for but the flu...absolutely.

I also send a child home if ANY of their activity is abnormal or outside the normal range for them.

ANY TIME a child is sent home from my care they are automatically excluded for 48 hours.

If a parent keeps them home on their own, it's only a 24 hour exclusion.

The baby has been dry the whole day? The mom needs to get the baby to the doctor asap! That baby's dehydrated and refusing to drink!

I'll tell them I'm excluding. She's not getting better but worse. I know they'll be upset since they already missed a chunk of work for dcg but meh...this is too much worry...

I just tell my families that they MUST have back up care for those times in which their child cannot attend my care. What back up care they have is up to them. A friend, a family member, a neighbor or another daycare....I don't care....it's ALL on them.

My DH has type 1 diabetes and the flu could land him in the hospital and I can't risk that. I also have several little ones who haven't had their full set of immunizations and can't risk their health and well being just to provide care for one child that is really way too sick to be in care anyways.

I would sympathize with the family FOR SURE but sympathizing with them does not require you to act. I would definitely tell them you understand that life happens and sometimes things are beyond our control but you are still required to put what is best for the group of kids above and beyond one child's (or family's) needs.

It's that simple.

I get this too, but if a DCP called me and told me my baby was bone dry and something was up, I'd put work aside, and my desire to save my time off aside, and get my kid to a dr or hospital immediately. This isn't like a small cold or cough, this baby is dehydrated. That can be very dangerous in children.
