Most providers come on here to complain about a child coming to DC sick when they should be home, perhaps not even allowing readmission with a dr's note, then there's this side that worries about neglect if they don't see a child for 4 days and they're still sick. It's just funny now the spectrum works. I've had 2 families who kept their child home for 4+ days when they were sick, paid, but another who has to be forced to get their child and take them to the dr when they're sick.
I see what you are saying and it does make some sense. It's not that the family is keeping them home sick and I am complaining about that, it is that I guess the way that I saw it was that the child has been miserable sick with fever, cough, bloody nose, etc and is not getting medical attention.

But after reading what others posted, I should not worry about it. Which I am trying my best right now to reserve my feelings about it. I can't blame this family for not doing things the way that I wish they would right?? IF this were my child and they were still having sever bloody nose after 7 days and fever, I would be going to the doctors.....

I know that other things have occurred in the past with this family that they did not seek medical attention in time and the child ended up with a serious health issue that ended in emergency surgery. Needless to say they kept writing it off last time (this was about 5 months ago) and I guess I am just hoping that it does not happen again. But there is nothing that I can do to change their decision, after all it is their choice to seek medical attention or not...

As for seeking medical advise, they did over a week ago but at that time the child only had a bloody nose. Now he has bloody nose still and other symptoms, not sure if that means anything or not, but I need to stop worrying...

Thanks for saying it straight....I think I need to hear the real truth to wake up sometimes...

well I do see where you are coming from since you are seeing a pattern here of the parents pushing off doctors appointments and such. but there is really nothing you can do about that either unless you want to demand a doctors note before they return....or if you think the medical neglect has snowballed and warrants a call to family services.

I sent this child home with a fever on Monday, today is Thursday. I asked if they were going to take her to the Doctors. DCF said no, they called last week about the on-going bloody nose, but they were told that it was due to the change in the weather.

This family is nice, but they just seem to be clueless when it comes to paying attention to their child's health.

I feel really bad for the child that they have not been able to see a doctor yet and get some medication.

When is it considered Neglect for not seeking medical attention?

          thanks for your help.....
My kids get sick and stay sick for weeks. They can have a fever for 5 days, and as long as it's not out of control, I do not bring them to the doctor. Bloody noses are very common with weather changes (or in very dry areas) so still not an emergency so long as mom/dad can stop the bleeding within a few minutes. They do not sound worried about it and unless you think they have no bond with the child, they're probably being smart about not taking the kid to the doctor. Keep in mind, every time I take my sick kid to the doctor, someone else is taking THEIR sick kid to the doctor and they may not have the same illness, thus exposing my children to FURTHER sickness. So it's best that I manage their care and unless it's pretty severe, I suspect a bacterial issue or it's an emergency situation. That isn't neglect in the slightest.
