I do both with no issues. Foster kids under 2 count in my daycare numbers, but after that, they don't count against my numbers.
Lots of the licensing stuff can be transferred from one agency to another, so it's a little less paperwork than others have to go through.- Flag

We have seriously considered it as well. From what I have heard, the foster agency tends to really like to work with home daycare providers because we have completed lots of the same training and are well aware of licensing rules, safety, and so on.- Flag

I've done both for several years. Each state is different, but most of my fostering information transfered to daycare licensing when I started my daycare. I assume it would work the opposite way as well...
In our state, the kids are counted in ratio until they are school age (just as our own children count until school age). I have to have room in my daycare to take the foster children since they won't pay for outside care to watch them if I'm a licensed daycare. That can be tricky sometimes, since you never know how many foster kids you'll get at one time or their ages - I always had to leave up to 4 spots open at all times to make sure I could take a sibling group of foster children.
However, in our state you can chose the number of foster children you want to care for and you could specify the ages you'd prefer, etc. but that doesn't mean they won't call you to take other children that don't fit your ideal desires if they are having troubles placing the children.
I could go on and on about foster care.If you'd like more information, just PM me. I'd be happy to share my perspective.

I did it temporarily for a child I knew. She was older though. In NY NO INFO was shared between childcare and foster care! My tax $ at work!- Flag

I have a similar question, I am in MI and I am currently a foster parent wanting to start a day care. I would love to avoid having to rejump through all the hoops that I to jump through when I became a foster parent.
I have already had my well and septic tested and passed through my foster care app. I also have been finger printed. Does any one know if I can just submit my old test for my new app? If it can transfer, how do I go about getting it transferred? (Even if you are not in the same state but transferred paperwork, let me know how it was done, so I can check here)
Thank you- Flag

Look at rule R 400.1909 (page 10). It explains the rule of having a foster care license and a child care license. I think you would just have to notify the dept. that you have both.- Flag

We do both.
I am in PA and none of our info is transferred between but foster care here is done through private agencies. It wasn't really a big deal though to photocopy background checks a second time and send them somewhere different.
They accepted copies of all tests and background checks and things as long as they were within a year.- Flag

We would LOVE to foster, but unfortunately it's apparently very difficult to get a foster care license while having a daycare license also. Actually difficult isn't the right word... near impossible is more like it.- Flag
