    Dribbling

    Another baby question.

    My daughter is 5 weeks old, but still she was 7.5 weeks premature. She's been doing well. She spent 3 weeks in the hospital and has been home for the past two.

    The only issue we're having now is that she dribbles a lot of the milk back out of her mouth while taking a feeding. Up to 1/3 of the bottle. She doesn't spit it out, she just lets in roll out of the sides of her mouth while she's still ****ing.

    She's only taking 70 cc's of formula per feeding (about 2.5 oz). So if she drips 1/3 of that out, she's really only getting about 50, and that's not enough. She wants to eat every hour and a half as a result. Her pediatrician said if she gets hungry, increase the amount but never feed her more often than every three hours. I am increasing it slightly but it doesn't matter much because she just wastes it down the front of herself.

    I thought it had something to with the bottle/nipple, but I've tried the Enfamil preemie nipples they gave us at the hospital, Avent and Dr. Browns...all did the same thing. I have one more kind to try, a cheap generic bottle/nipple.

    She's going back to the doctor in a few days...but in the meantime, help???

    My DD used to do the same thing. My mom bought a few playtex nursers and a package of the brown latex nipples instead of the clear silicone ones. The wider latex nipple did the trick. Her ped said the latex is softer and can form a tighter seal around the inside of the baby's lips whereas the clear silicone nipples are too firm. He said he mostly sees it with preemies and tongue tied babes.

      I agree, some of it may be the seal and some of it may simply be that the nipples are giving her too much milk at one time and she can't swallow it.

      One option is one if the nut orthodontic nipples. It releases milk at the top of the nipple instead of the end.

      Another option is the playtex nipples as the pp said. In my experience, their slow flow gives out much less milk with each ****. And they are soft enough to get a firm latch.

        I agree try a softer nipple but also increase the amount of formula if she is draining the bottle. That will make up for what she wasted. Is she gaining weight?
        It:: will wait

            The babies r us and Walmart has the playtex nursery REALLY CHEAP. like a few bucks and ey come with five liners. Can't hurt to try for a few bucks.

            And same with the nuk orthodontic. They are just a few bucks for one. If you could get one of each and see how they work. You can always change back to the others when she grows a little more and can control the milk flow better

            It would be just as cheap to get one bottle of each than just buying the nipple anyway
