    Told Can't Pick Up

I have a child who has croup... noticed the cough yesterday after nap. Informed parent that it sounds like croup and if the child still has the cough couldn't return today. So, the child arrives today and has None Stop barking cough!!! FYI - Croup puts my own child in the hospital! So, I call for a pick up and I'm informed that neither of the parents can pick up and that I need to keep the child. :/

Yet, this same parent took a "sick" day this week because the parent didn't feel good. Yet, can't come and get their own sick child! The child is CRABBY, just like yesterday and when the child crys it sounds so swollen even the child's voice.

Now, I know many of you who allow a child to stay with croup. But because my own child, who is young and is apart of the group, gets put in the hospital, I can't take the chance.

If croup is in yur illness policy, then exclude.

Go down her contacts and emergency pick up list until you find someone. If nobody else will pick up, text mom if she doesn't pick up in one hour, you are calling CPS or DHS. I have all that in my policies.

I require all parents have backup provider or family in cases of illness or emergencies. I require all parents who are called to pick up arrange pick up within one hour. I have an illness policy for a reason.

Why was the child accepted into care today without a Dr note?

Can't pick up? That's not an option. It's their child. Call them back, tell them they have 30 minutes.

If they don't show up until pickup time then have your term letter typed up and their stuff packed.

I was informed that they never heard the cough last night, but their other child did cough. So, I said we will try it but if the child has a bark cough I will call for pick up.

Yes, I was informed that they both are out of sick time and they both are the only ones in the place that they work so neither of them can pick up and that I needed to keep the child. Even after I informed that croup will put my own child in the hospital and that I could not keep the child.

I think that's exactly what I'm going to do. They are my only family but I'm sick of them wanting me to bend rules and the last time the child was sick, and the doc had said that the child will be contagious for another 3 -4 days, they called and wanted me to take the child back and got upset that I wouldn't.

I do not allow children with croup to stay. My daughter has respiratory issues, and it's not worth the risk to her.

Next time, don't allow the child to stay. Send them right back out the door with the parent. "Sorry DCP, DCK obviously still has the cough we discussed yesterday. I'll see you Monday, if the cough is gone."

I would call back the parents and tell them pick up in non optional. The child needs to be gone within the hour. If they can't come, they need to find someone who can. If they do not pick up within the hour, I would have termination papers ready for them when they arrive. You are in charge of deciding what is considered too sick/grumpy to be in your care, not the parents. Bringing a sick child and ignoring your request to come pick up the child is, in my opinion, complete disrespect for you and your child.

          Good luck!

my MIL is a retired RN and she says that croup itself is not contagious, but, I am sure the virus that causes it is. I don't know if that makes you feel better. But, I agree, they need to pick up. No excuse and I would term if it's an option.

That's why I don't allow kids with croup is my own child has respiratory issues and the last time my child ended up having a 4 day hospital visit because of croup. This family was one of the best until this year and now it's massive disrespect for me and my family. They now don't want to follow my polices. I'm always told that they never see the cough/runny nose...etc. It only ever happens at my house. Amazing.

Refusal to pick up a child is grounds for IMMEDIATE termination.

I certainly wouldn't wait until tonight...I'd call every person on their contact/emergency list.

Heck, I'd be so steaming mad that I would call the parents back and tell them they are termed IMMEDIATELY and that they have 30 minutes to come pick up their child and if they don't show up, I would call CPS and report them for failure to address their child's needs.

No way, would I continue caring for the child all day when it posed a thread to my own child.

Your right. It's the same virus as a cold virus. It's just that some kids have smaller airways and are simply more predisposed to the Barky croup symptoms.

My daughter, who has bad asthma, always had terrible croup. Steroids, breathing treatments argggffff...

I don't exclude for croup because it's the same thing as a cold. If the child wasn't barkingetc and yu don't exclude for colds, your child could still get croup

I'd call everyone on the emergency contact list to come pick up the boy and then terminate the parents. My policies are not negotiable.
