I actually put something on my business Facebook page about outdoor time. Let me scour through status updates and try to find it to post here.

    Edited: Found it!

Steal away, it is not mine! It is cottagecountry.com's image (states their website at the top). Everyone should post it on their Facebook pages so parents can learn more about why being outside is HEALTHY.

There was a parent of a 2 yr old DCB who never took him outside unless they were going to the car. When DCB was enrolled in my center, the parents requested that we put mosquito netting around the playground so DCB won't get bitten. When we told them no, they then insisted that we hire a separate teacher just to watch DCB while everyone else is outside. They only lasted 3 weeks.

Are you serious, they wanted you to hire a separate teacher???? The nerve of them

I'll hire a separate teacher at the dcps expense!::

OMG LMAO - they wanted you to put mosquito netting around the playground?! ::::::::::::

Back to the OP - what if you looked them over REALLY well when they arrived and documented every mosquito bite, then looked them over again before they go home to prove that they're (hopefully) not being bitten up at your place?

I'd explain to the father that any state daycare requires outdoor time. You feel bad he wants to pull the kids over this, but that he won't get any different results anywhere else. He should sign a form for you to spray DEET and that may repel the mosquitos or maybe there is something else that can help. Unfortunately, his child just happens to taste delicious to these bugs. I know this because my own son is a mosquito magnet (well, now we're in a drought, so no need to worry about that anymore...) He was bitten by hundreds and hundreds one time and he got so swollen. We gave him benadryl and calamine and cortizone and he was good as new in a week. This happened at daycare and well, frankly, even if it hadn't, it may have just happened anywhere. He just tastes good, I guess.

I actually had the thought of offering to hire someone to watch the child while you go outside, BUT at the parents expense. "DCD, licensing regulations prevent me from leaving your child alone inside while we play outside, but I would be more than happy to hire someone to come in for 1hr per day while we go outside. I pay employees $10.00 an hour, so that will be an extra $50.00 in tuition weekly".

I will never understand what the big deal about a mosquito bite is...

I understand the big deal where I live. ONE BITE can KILL you. West Nile is outrageous and much too common in our area. Everyone here takes Mosquitos very seriously. And I can honestly say neither my kids nor daycare kids get bitten despite their swarming. I use 40% deet on myself and the kids every single day. There's not much success here with most any other spray. Living in the woods, the yard sprays don't work either. And even worse itching are the black gnats. Any deet under 40% won't work. I don't have them bad here but my dad does a mile down the road. They don't cause illness but the itching is much more intense.

Just being honest here, because I'm as careful as I am, I can tell you EXACTLY where and when my kids get a bite. Ad it most certainly doesn't happen here.

Also being honest, if my own kids didn't get bitten at my house because I was really careful but got eaten up in daycare, I'd be HOT. I actuallynhadmthat happen once after leaving my 1.5 year old daughter with a private sitter for two hours with a bottle of skeeter spray and sunblock and begging the person to please use it, returned only to find a sunburned eaten up child and I was not very friendly to that woman.

Here one bite may mean a death sentence, but not everywhere.

If you are using spray there OP and you are positive they didn't happen there, then tell recommend dad to buy some deet. Also, check your spray to be sure it has enough deet in it. My skeeters still bite even with 25% deet. That's why we have to use 40%

I also have read that Bounce dryer sheets are a natural repellent

Below is an article with an actual study that was done

Gardeners often claim that putting Bounce fabric softener sheets in their pockets is an effective way to repel pests like mosquitoes and gnats. In a new study, researchers discussed a series experiments they conducted to ascertain whether Bounce dryer sheets (Outdoor Fresh Scent, Procter and Gamble) repel fungus gnat adults under laboratory conditions. The research team also analyzed the volatile compounds in the dryer sheets using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

I could TOTALLY understand it in that case. And if you had sent bug spray.

I live in an area where it isn't a concern. However, I still have parents who will make mention that their child got a mosquito bite the previous day, and leave it at that. Yes, mosquitoes live outside - and you haven't sent any bug spray. In an area where West Nile is not a concern, it feels a bit blameful and pointlessly so, to tell me your child got a bug bite yesterday. KWIM ?

Absolutely know what you mean. To me, I think it would be like a skinned knee and I would insert several eye rolls. As long as it wasn't a west Nile risk, it would be pointless to point fingers unless like others say, there were like 20 of them

I looked for the bites and saw 4 on one child and 2 on the other. There has been several times when the mom dropped them off that they had been bitten up pretty badly by mosquitoes and she told me because they had swollen up so she assumes they are allergic to them.

On yesterday when dad dropped them off he said that one of the boys had been itching so he gave him some Benadryl . These boys have been sick for the past week or so and just came back on Wednesday.

Fast forward to them getting up from nap. When I got the dcb up that he gave the Benadryl to I noticed that his eye was swollen, and he was scratching his side. I looked him over and his entire face and body was red and covered in hives and he was scratching non stop. He was fine the entire day, no hives, no itching, or anything:confused:

I had this type of outbreak before and went to the emergency room because I couldn't stop itching. They told me it was an allergic reaction to something and gave me a shot. I don't know what caused him to break out like that, I don't know if the dcps aren't telling me everything I need to know. All I know is our routine on yesterday has been the same since they started a year ago. What I served for breakfast, lunch and snack I served it before and they love it.

I called dad to pick them up because I do not administer meds unless it is life threatening. When dad got here he said that dcb has never broken out like that before. All he said is "O he's fine".
