WOW...heaven spelled backward...those parents are SOOOOO creative!

I always wondered if I would turn away a kid if I didn't like their name (there are some names I just cannot stand) or couldn't pronounce it but I know I would try to see how the kid is before I judged them based on their name. You could always try to call him "Lu" or "Luce" (though that sounds like a nickname for "Lucy" or "Lucile").

But yeah that does sound like a prank, especially if she is advertising as a 'Christian-based' daycare. But I would still be careful because it could be a serious inquiry and they could report her for discrimination.

But who knows maybe they are from another country/culture/religion and they heard that name and liked it but didn't know of its negative associations in western society or it has another meaning in their culture or they named them after someone else. Lucifer is also the name of the cat from Cinderella (though it was a mean cat). I liked the names Sapphire or Sapphira for a girl, but I found out Sapphira is a biblical name (didn't know that before) and its associated with a negative biblical character: http://www.todayschristianwoman.com/...rch/10.60.html. So I am leaning more towards Sapphire.

Just wanted to comment on some of the weird spelling names -

When I was subbing, a 4th grade girl has the name Crstl (pronounced Crystal, but spelled without any vowels ...) I think that one bothered me the most. My SIL is a kindergarten teacher and has had, MORE THAN ONCE, a kid with random silent letters thrown into the name. Weird.

My name is uncommon to begin with but people always ask me if I spell it with 1 R or 2 R's (I spell it with 1 BTW). I think it would be weird to spell it "Starr" it looks like it would be pronounced "Star-ar"- it looks like a typo to me. Sometimes my school even spelt it wrong, but in that case it didn't help that my middle name starts with an R. A few years ago I actually thought about if I named a future daughter "Sapphire" spelling it Sapphyrre, Sapphyre, or even Sapphirre but now I think it just makes it look ghetto.

"The wickedest man in the world!" I'd have reservations about the parents of a kid that name in an interview! :: I wouldn't turn them away over it though, I'd probably be nosey and ask! :: Although I've seen it spelled other ways and never thought about it, maybe its just this spelling that has the connection for me.

Years ago I had a family interested in a center I was director of, the kids name? Reinhard Heinrich (plus a very common, non-German last name) Needless to say mom and dad weren't thrilled to see our multi-cultural dolls/pictures and diverse community.

I agree, which is why I said

"My families are all professional white collar families. Nothing wrong with blue collar, just stating a fact. I had one family that were blue collar and acted like a bunch of yahoos. Of course I'm not saying that all blue collar people act that way, just saying this one particular family did."

I just recentenltly had an interview with a child named Duke Oliver. I didn't like the name because 1. I was afraid I'd call him Dukey (like poop) accidentally! 2. I didn't like addressing a child as princess Fiona, Sir Carter, or DUKE Oliver. 3. It's just too darn long. I asked if he goes by Duke or Oliver and she said he goes by Duke Oliver.

I wouldn't have not taken him for that reason, I ended up not taking him because of schedule reasons. But it wasn't my favorite name and I'm glad I don't have to say it every day. :P

Lucifer was an angel before he fell from Heaven and became Satan. Therefore, that name would not bother me.

I know a parent who thinks calling her kid "thug" and "gangsta" and "sick" is ok.

WTF? The kids all have "ghetto" names except one who has a relatively nice name, and she lets you know how "ghetto" the kids are! You know, her 6yo, her 4yo, and her 1yo baby! I can't stand this woman and she knows it.

I would NEVER take her kids in child care, and not because of what she calls them, but because she's not the type of parent I could respect.

please, I'm not trying to offend you.

but was the angle acute or obtuse?

(I'm sorry, I just happened upon this post at 1 AM in a weird mood after three tiring (but fun!) days and it's one of my typo pet peeves )

That's why I questioned it earlier in this thread. I have a DCK who's name is Allistair so the spelling didn't make a connection with me.

Funny how letters can do that.

The same family has a child who has a middle name of Hussein.....I never gave it a second thought! They are a wonderful family and I am guessing it is a cultural thing more than a need to be odd, different or unique...kwim?

I've had my share of funky or weird names over the years. Sometimes I wonder and sometimes I just outright feel badly for the child as the parent obviously didn't think of what it would mean for their child to carry such a moniker.

Apparently if you would have reservations about parents who would give their child a name that represents evil you are judgemental.....but if you make fun of a parents attempt at giving their child a unique name you are..witty and superior at naming children than others??

                              Names, names, names, what fun

True story, when I was a child their was a man that lived up the road from us (he could carve beautiful wooden statues using a chainsaw) his name was "Ole Chainsaw" pronounced Oily, the worst part was his last name was Butts so his name was.......exactly.

He lived with a woman whose last name was Weise pronounced "Wise" and their mailbox said "Weise-Butts" on it.

As far as unusual names, I have had a little boy named Ocean, two named Madden ( both parents were amazed anyone else could come up with this name, dd has friends at school named Unique, and Shadie...
I had a lady call yesterday (sounded middle eastern so may be cultural) with a child with a name pronounced "Spuh" I asked if she would spell that for me and she told me Sp.....ummmm okay,

Whatever floats your boat, and when we have another child we would like to name him Damian, maybe for a middle name as I do not want the negativity surrounding my child but I would actually prefer it as a first name, I picked this name out when I was 10 yo and I had never even heard of The Omen....so...
