If as a parent you KNOW you need to work on a holiday, then I would think that as a parent/adult you would NOT sign on or enroll with a provider who closes for federal holidays.

I have banking to do on certain days but instead of demanding that the bank stay open for ME, I simply adjust my schedule accordingly.

Also NOT having family members within a 200 mile radius is YOUR problem, NOT your child care providers.

Thinking that your provider should be accountable or responsible for that IS selfish on YOUR part.

I always take vacation that week because I figure it is one less day the parents have to find other care for. If I wasn't on vacation I would definitely be closing that Friday!

I had planned to work the 5th-never even considered taking it off. In fact, the last 2 years I had parents working in retail and in the medical field and I stayed open. We have a big family gathering about 40 miles away. The town parade goes in front of the house, then we have a barbecue, etc. The past 2 years, I took a dck with me. We had 100 times more fun having a kid with us. Both sets of parents are off this year. We thought about borrowing one of them for the day. ;-)

At pick up today, mom mentioned that she was taking a vacation day the 5th, so we will both have a long weekend. I think the 4th is unpaid (I'll have to check my contract) but the 5th will be paid since I'm available.

I'm taking off two days next week so I only took off the 4th. We don't usually do much for the holiday anyway so I don't mind. It will be a low-key day on the 5th with lots of naps, lots of protein, and possibly something REALLY special for afternoon snack...
Hee hee! Look, I have a signature!

You know, that is a really good question. I know we are off on the 4th, but not sure about the 5th. We will probably find out how many need care that day and decide accordingly.

All of my parents for the most part work on holidays, due to their profession. The ONLY days I take off are Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. I have two days a week off already and my state pays I only get paid for if they are here. I can't see charging this three sibling set low income mother $60 for a paid holiday for a drop in rate. I only work when she works. Which is 5 days a week.

I termed the second shift kiddo, long story.

So now I just have the three sibling set, plus my drop in two. One is an overnight drop in with advance notice. The other is an afternoon drop in here and there for 4 hours max.

However, the one who is doing four day a week half day preschool starting in August will be paid and paid holidays just like school does.

That's why I always include the 5th as a paid holiday. I know fireworks do not start until 10:00pm so kids are out way too late. I also had too many parents dropping off thier tired cranky kids and then going back home for the day.
