I would like to empty it, add a good bottom and start over with fresh sand. The kids haven't been able to use it the last 2 seasons because they are waiting for me to clean it out. Part of me wants to get rid of it, but they really enjoy using it when they are able to. The benches are nice. We have corner seats on ours that work well for sitting. You are lucky to have such a handy hubby. Mine tries and means well, but things don't always turn out the way they should ::
I've heard that adding cinnamon (assuming no DCK have allergies) helps get rid of ants. Could try that.

The sandbox is awesome! My hubby is handy but has so little free time I'm hoping I can get him to build a few things over the summer.

I just got a new sandbox this year also. Years ago my dh built us a 4 x 4 but it isn't big enough anymore so now I have an 8 x 8.

Awesome! We built a big sandbox for our own kids when they were little and it had benches, but not like that! When we moved, we decided not to build a new one as our kids were getting older and not playing in it as much. Then I started the daycare and got a turtle one just to see if it was worth building a big one. I have only had 1 kid that was really interested in the sand and would play for hours, no one else touches it so I'm just keeping the turtle instead.
