What Do You Do With Non-Napping Kids?

I have always allowed my kids who don't nap to play quietly on their mats with books, puzzles, or small toys.

I have a kid who is not napping about half the time. Today a dcm brought in dcb's ipad and said "Here, he can play this if he doesn't sleep today." and RAN back out.

Um, no.

1. it has internet access, and I am NOT sitting next to him monitoring it.
2. The FIRST thing he said during circle time was "I am NOT sleeping today, I brought my ipad to play and you all have to nap na-na-na-na-na!"


Well, dcb fell asleep during nap today, and woke up 10 minutes ago and is DEMANDING his ipad. I said No. Naptime is almost over anyway and I told him to go play toys.

I don't take non-nappers and no way in h3ll I would allow a child who is stil young enough to require child care to be allowed to play with an electronic device that costs that much!

I have it right in my contract/handbook that I do not allow any cell phones, hand held games or anything similar. I'm watching your child, not your electronics.

I only take SA'ers who don't nap, and they watch a movie quietly (I allow them to bring Nintendo DS's as well). This child is 2. 2! I have agreed to keep him until the end of summer(doesn't make a difference to have him nap or not since SA'ers are awake), but if he is still not napping by that time, he will have to find different care.

Exactly. Huge liability issue if something were to happen to the iPad at your house.

And I can't help but laugh at the fact that he was mocking the other kids about being able to play on his iPad during naptime, and then he fell asleep.

I do not allow toys or items from home to be brought. Do you have a similar rule?
I would have handed it back to DCM IMMEDIATELY and said, "I'm sorry, no electronics allowed for children under the age of 5." since she may know that you allow school agers to have them? Tape a note to it that states your policy on electronics/toys from home, put it in a plastic grocery bag, and double knot that grocery bag.

Rght now I am on my I-pad, but iPads for kids become an evil machine. Kids are becoming addicted to them realllly young and it's scary!

Also, yes way too expensive to have at my center!

This is the first thing out of my 4 yr old daughter's mouth when we visit my parents/sister, "Aunt Amy, can I play a game on your iPad?" I always tell her not to ask, but it happens anyways, and then she asks about 4-5 more times throughout the visit. My sister (14 yrs old) does not have a problem telling my kids no when it needs to be said, so she doesn't give in to the whining and pouting. We do not have one at home, but she started getting to play with one at preschool (they had some music game on it, where the kids composed a song with different shapes and colors), and I'm ok with the occasional game here or there for a young age. But yes, my daughter has become obsessed! It drives me crazy!

Tempting. Tempting to let all children play with the iPad right after snack with sticky fingers.

2. I don't allow toys from home
3. After mom ran out the door I would have called her and said "Jane, please don't tell me or Timmy what he can do at nap time. He will not be given the ipad to play with at nap. As a matter of fact, the ipad is not allowed to come to daycare ever again. If Timmy causes a disruption during nap over the ipad I will call and have you come and get him so the rest of my group can nap. Thanks."

This is where my "Hotel California" rule about toys from home would come in handy.....I'd love to have an ipad...and free too! :: ::

:hug: I would be SOOOO upset at that mom. I would write up a letter explaining your rules about electronics TODAY ! So sorry you had to deal with that.
