I have a lot of children bring a dozen donuts for their birthday as their birthday treat. The children love them far more than cupcakes/cake! happyface

We have frequent discussions here about what is nice to eat "every once in awhile" as a treat and what is a healthy meal. The children tell their parents off. ::

      I don't consider donuts breakfast.
I agree, donuts aren't breakfast, yet for the food program here, you can serve donuts and poptarts! Poptarts because of the crust My rep said they are going to change it, but I wonder why those items would be on there in the first place! I do however once in a blue moon let my daughter have a donut for breakfast....shhhhh.

Poptarts, cinnamon rolls, donuts, and a ton of cookies are food program approved here, but not banana chips, or guacamole.

Nice, I just don't get it! They really need to revamp what is healthy to serve and what is not! You can get in trouble or disqualified from the FP for not serving a nutritious meal, but you can serve junk....hmmmm

Wow. Ewwwwwwwww! I think it's really unfortunate that a state-regulated food program would have so much garbage on it... how is Cheese Wiz even considered FOOD???

We can serve gaucamole, you just have to list it as avacodo. Just like we could have frozen yogurt (home-made), but list it as yogurt, or 100% juice pops and list it as juice.

Not sure about the banana chips, but they are just dried bananas, right? We can serve dates, figs, and dried apricots, but not bananas? Oh, and why are grapes and raisins seperate on the MMK anyway...

Yup! I know of area providers who regularly serve cheez it's and velveeta, hotdogs and canned ravioli.

Banana chips are listed as not creditable due to high fat content (we like to dip ours in yogurt, yum!)

guacamole was DENIED by my food program recently, it was HM and organic. She even apologized when she wrote why I had a few refused claims. crazy! (not 100% avocado, not creditable!)

I was looking at the list. I've served hash browns (the fresh kind with onions, ham, and a little cheese), hot-dogs, hot chocolate (made with milk), and milk-shakes (about 1/4 cup), or cookies/cupcakes/donut holes. Probably once every 60 days, ONE of those things has shown up on my menu.

My kids' school serves that crap daily!

That's crazy, man. Tomato/meat sauce isn't 100% tomatoes, but you can claim it as a vegie. My guac recipe is gauc plus spices plus tomatoes.

Banana chips have fat content? I thought they were just dried bananas. I've never served them (and I'm allergic to bananas), so I've never looked. Learn something everday!

I agree - some of the items served HOME-MADE, with extremely nutritious sides and on a very rare occasion as a treat is fine... but you are right, so many schools and providers (and PARENTS) would and do serve this junk on a daily basis. Makes me mad!

Banana chips are soaked in oil!
Most dried fruit isn't as healthy as it would seem... loaded with sugar!

ew...ok...won't add banana chips to the "ok" list for sure. I really thought they were just dried bananas...aka banana jerky.

I realize the dried fruit thing can be overdone. I think it's ok if there is no added sugar and it's more of a treat. Still better than gummy-anythings.
