i'm sure you've tried it, but just to cover all the bases...

have you explained how drinking from a cup is supposed to work? "DCB, you don't put your whole mouth on it, silly! Here, like this," and take it and position it for him.
Hee hee! Look, I have a signature!

Would his parents be receptive to knowing that it is a milestone he is very behind in meeting? Maybe put an end to sippy cups if they know their child is delayed because of it.

Drinking from a cup may seem banal but it helps the facial muscles form for proper speech development, too.

I think you need to try to get through to the parents by letting them know delayed he appears to be and that the sippy cup is hindering his development. I would print out some research from the American Academy of Pediatrics to back this up so it doesn't seem like you are attacking but rather coming from an informed position. Good luck!

              Just wanted to update:

              Breakfast:

I served breakfast and then I took his sippy cup. I replaced it with a dixie cup of apple juice. My thinking was he would "want" the apple juice over the milk.

He refused to even touch the cup.

I asked him to take 1 drink. He just sat there.

I asked if he would like me to help him and he said yes.

So when I was walking him thru things I noticed that the dixie cup was really flimsy and sorta hard to handle without squishing it.

              FF- Lunch

I gave him a very small amount of milk in a normal plastic 6oz size cup. I sat beside him and guided him thru how to drink out of it. He tried and yes some dripped down the front of him BUT HE WAS TRYING

He kept right on trying and was rather successful! He was so excited and wouldn't not stop telling me that he drank out of a cup. His excitement really made my day!!! happyface

So I'm going to keep on with this! Thanks for all of your help!!

ooohh...so he wants to! Does he have a favorite color, or thing (cars, dinosaurs, etc). Maybe if you have him one of "his own" it would add to the excitement.

                Or these:

They are "color your own mug" kits. I used to have them, and the only bad thing is they don't hold up long if you wash them in the dishwasher. The seal it not super-duper tight. There's probably a way to solve that..superglue?

The two year old (he'll be three next month) boy currently in my care is still on a sippy cup, and I have been trying to get him to drink out a regular cup with very little success. The parents keep him on a sippy cup (especially the ones with the rubbery spout) and aren't really trying to get him to try a cup. I have been using a small plastic travel cup of my son's that has a lid and plastic straw, and he will drink out of that. It's a start but it feels like an uphill battle because as soon as one of his parents picks him up, he gets the sippy cup again *palmface*

A couple of years ago I watched a four-year-old girl and her two-year-old brother..not only did the two-year-old have a sippy cup, the four-year-old did as well! Their father explained that it was because the two-year-old liked to pick up regular cups and fling the contents all over the room, so they had both kids still on the sippy cup, even though the oldest could drink out of a regular cup. Ironically not once did the two-year-old grab cups and fling them around when he was here, and the four-year-old drank out of a cup like everybody else. Though it made me want to ask him if him and his wife drank out of "sippies" too..after all, their two year old liked to grab cups and throw the contents all over the house! ::

yeah...here's an idea. Your (their) kids don't need to drink 24/7 and carry their cups all over the house.

When my oldest was less than two, he could carry a cup without a lid to his little table and set it down. It wasn't completely full, mind you.

Oh no..they don't get drinks 24/7 or carry them around the house. When the two children I mentioned would arrive, it would be during snacktime, and when the other children would have a drink with their snack. The cups would be placed to where the two-year-old in question couldn't grab them and fling them around. I should've made that clearer..sorry about that.

Edit to add: At the two-year-old and four-year-old's home, was where the two-year-old would throw filled drink cups everywhere according their their father.

sorry. I should have made that clearer. My sarcasm was directed at the parents, not at you. I assumed THEY let the kids walk all over with cups 24/7. One of my bff's does this (among so many other naughty habits), and her house (love her to pieces though) is disgusting. eck.

Awesome! Can you just take the sippy cup away in the am or not allow it to come to your house anymore. I don't allow cups of any sort come to my house.
