Totally Need Your Thoughts On This....

DCB turned 3 this year and cannot drink out of a cup.

He CAN drink from a sippy cup, but a regular cup- no.

He puts his mouth over the entire circle of the cup and it goes everywhere. <--that's only when he "tries". Most of the time he just stares at the cup.

Am I wrong to think that he should be able to drink from a cup at 3 years old?

He does have some undiagnosed developmental delays. I don't think anything major, but I am not trained to diagnose delays.

So am I wrong to not give him his sippy while he is here and only offer him a cup?

Any suggestions on how to cup train him?

Thanks and here is to a fabulous week

is his speech delayed? if so, he probably has some oral motor delays as well which could delay his success with a cup. Can he drink from a straw?

I would offer the cup, hand over hand, position his mouth correctly, with just a sip or two in it, rinse and repeat at the beginning of each meal. I have had some kiddos with delays, but not one who wasn't using a cup at age 3. I cup train at age 2. ALL of my 2's drink from regular cups without spilling.

At 3 he should be able to drink out of a cup. When I have to train for the kids to drink out of cup I start with water in small Dixie cups. (the kind for bathrooms.) The mouth of the cup is small and the amount of water is small. When they get the hang of that I will move up to bigger cups, more water. When they can drink from that I move to milk etc. Yes while I'm training I will give them milk/juice in sippy cups (only at meals) after they drink the water in the dixie cup.

Yes it is a milestone that should have been reached about a year and a half ago.

Google developmental milestones drink from a cup independently.

Can he drink out of a cup with a straw? idk, I would think that would help & make it more fun, and less of a chore for him. To learn to not flip the cup all the way up to drink, and help with those mouth muscles, too.

ETA: I usually start cup drinking (water) at about 18mo-2yo, all are usually cup trained around 2yo.

He is speech delayed. I am not sure if he can drink from a straw. I will try it at snack time today. Thanks!

I am currently trying using dixie cups, but he is not interested

I would think at the very least he would try just bc the other kiddos are doing it.

Trying the straw at snack time today. He comes to DC with his own sippy and his mom says he is very picky and won't use any other cup. I think its bc he can't

And here is where that always dreaded conversation with Mom comes in.... sippy cups are convenient, and convenience ALWAYS wins out it seems!

Sippy cups are easy for parents but don't do the kids any favours.

It really is an important developmental milestone.

It is good you are questioning this.

Maybe you can try to use a water/sports bottle, a portable coffee thermos (paper or alum), or a cantina/flask to try to slowly train him how to drink out of a regular cup and slowly get a cup with a bigger opening. Or you can go to the $1 store and get a packet of some of those regular cups that have an optional matching lid and straw (I got some there yesterday). Even if that doesn't work as far as training, if he at least gets used to using those they are more socially acceptable and developmentally appropriate for a 3 year old than a sippy cup. If he has speech delays the sippy cup may actually be to blame: http://www.raisehealthyeaters.com/20...ng-sippy-cups/

I used to watch a 4 year old who was very developmentally delayed (I actually thought he was 3 for a long time until I saw his date of birth on a prescription) and he had lots of eating issues. When I first started watching him he usually used to only drink out of sippy cups and he had lots of crooked teeth (though there are some sippy cups that are supposed to decrease the likelihood of that) eventually he was able to drink out of a straw, sometimes he would drink out of a cup without it but it would spill.

Maybe you can make it more fun with a silly straw or try slowly by seeing about getting bowls with built in straws. I remember when I was a kid (in the 90s) we all loved those bowls with build in straws for when we had soup or cereal.
