Our house was built in 2011 - we put in popcorn. Someone mentioned it is cheap and requires no skill. Our old house had Knockdown, which looks nice, until their is a plumbing problem and you need to cut out a portion of the ceiling. It requires great skill to patch the area to match, then you need to paint the entire ceiling. We have 9 ft ceilings, and I don't spend much time staring that them...

I heard it is supposed to act as a sound barrier- some how I don't think it works. They are all through out my house exept in the kitchen and it looks really bad because its all uneaven and some of it is warped because of water damage.

Heyyyyy...I decorated in the 70's absolutely without the use of ANY type of drugs. I had orange shag carpet in my living room and paneling on the walls that had huge orange and yellow flowers on it with greenery. At that time it was really 'cool'...

I also had a camping trailer which I decorated with orange shag carpet and the walls were white and I had a black and white psychodelic contact paper I used to cover a lot of things.

Wow...just describing that now makes me dizzy, but back in the day it was cool.

It's just the way it was then and I'm sure in 40 years our styles will look weird to the younger generation.

But I vote for laminate as well. I just installed new carpet in my play room but only because my home is on a cement slab and the floors are usually cold so I wanted something to insulate...now I'm considering changing to laminate and putting a heating system under the flooring. Not sure if that will work or not, but will be checking into when I'm ready to change (hopefully soon)

:::: I grew up in the 70ies so even though I agree that things "looked" normal because that was how everyone decorated, I take NO credit as I was just a kid but I do look back now and think "Wow! What were my parents thinking?!!?"

.....then again, I look back at the 80ies and think the same thing sometimes and I was the parent then so....

I have laminate in my dining room, kitchen and living room but the daycare playroom has carpeting (as do the bedrooms). I put carpeting in the playroom because of babies crawling and bought a carpet shampoo machine.

If I had your age group though I'd go with laminate for sure. Laminate is great and the only drawback seems to be the noise. If the children are working around my dining room table and drop things or drop things at lunch it is loud.

I grew up in the 80's and my parents had deep burgandy red shag carpeting in EVERY roomm except the kitchen (yes even in the dining room), a big brown leather couch, dark wood paneling, a hanging lamp of a woman which dripped oil around her, popcorn ceilings and yellow/beige linoleum and an avocado green fridge in the kitchen .

Everybody I know had one of these in their houses when I was a kid ...

As far as the icky popcorn ceiling thing ... my buddy is a contractor and he says that many companies and building firms preffer it because it's quicker. Putting up ceiling and mudding it properly takes a lot of time in order for the seams to be evened out and unnoticeable so most just throw up the drywall, mud the seams quickly and then spray the popcorn up which camouflages the imperfections .

Wow! I remember seeing one of those at my friends house when I was a teenager. I thought that was the coolest thing! I couldn't wait to get home and tell my parents all about it, but, alas.... we never got one.

                      They also had these

                      They were so cool!!
