This past fall I had to let go of a family (3 boys) who behaved in almost similar fashion. In my case they were fine so long as they could do what they wanted They were very picky eaters and would sit and cry at the lunch table because they didn't like what I was serving. At nap time they refused to lie down and would cry/scream/gag the entire time. My general experience is that older children (1 and up) usually are adjusted by two weeks, I only give infants up to one month because it can take that long to develop a good routine. This family lasted two weeks before I cried uncle.

The problem is that the behavior isn't just upsetting to you - it upsets everyone else in the dc. I had other kids who would get so upset and say "stop crying, I can't take it!" My school aged kids would come in the door and say "I hope the brothers are not here today, I don't want to deal with crying!" Obviously that was addressed with them, but really, kids will be brutally honest even if you are not. And I sense that the other kids, who are usually very compassionate to friends when they are upset, recognized that this was not genuine being sad/upset crying but "poor behavior because they were not getting their way" tears. The Monday after the left I started three new kids and it's been WONDERFUL.
