Am I wasting heat/How do you do it?

I keep at least 4 windows in the main area of my home open partially do all fresh air to be soming in and hopefully oblivate the germs.

We (per liscensing) have to keep our homes at 68 degrees.

I'm feeling like all my heat though is being ****ed out the windows when it comes on. Our bill is high enough in the winter without it all going outside.

We have vents sometimes two in front of the windows.

shut those windows. fresh air is good but it is not going to kill the germs.

get the kids outside for some fresh air even if it is for 5 minutes
    It:: will wait

See thats what I'm confused about.

Talking to hospital staff/our doctor they all said that is why Dr. offices/hospitals are colder. They keep it colder to keep the germs infestation down. I actually asked because I always had noticed this.

Maybe I'll open them up for awhile, turn the heat way down, then shut the windows and the heat can go up.

I try to cycle air through the house anytime I can. When you do open the windows, turn your house fan on (on your thermostat) to run the entire time the windows are open to increase circulation. It's so hard in the winter time to keep fresh air in and cold out.

          I have a medical background...

I don't think it's necessary to keep them open all the time. However, you are correct as to why medical facilities are generally cooler. Warm areas on a body can be a breeding ground for germs. This doesn't help when the home is warm also. This is only one reason. I keep my home at 68 during the day also. I open my windows every night while I make dinner. My heat is not on during this time...

            Thanks everyone!

Maybe I'll open them up first thing in the morning, then during lunch or nap and one last time in the evening.

Sounds better then all my heat going out the window-

ok, if you open your window and shut your heat off, when you turn it on it will take longer to reheat your house so really you will not be saving any money.

second, can you turn your heat down, mine is at 66 degree's, I never touch it.

I would also only open the windows at nap time and thats it. Also, close your vents.

Nope it has to be kept at 68

My luck I would turn it down and have an inspection/food lady complaining its to cold or something.

I agree that it does take longer and more energy if you allow the temp in your house to drop drastically. We were always told to only lower or raise our thermastat by 2 degrees or it will cause the unit to overwork and use a lot of electricity.

My advice is to open the windows during the warmest part of the day, or maybe when you are cooking and using the over/stove. Or maybe just crack them partially and don't keep them way open! I use the vents in my house to keep some rooms warmer and others cooler. For instance, my bedroom becomes a furnace so i have to keep the vent almost closed in the winter. The sleep room for dck is always cool in winter, so I keep that vent wide open, etc.

To avoid losing heat, I would close off any doors of rooms that you aren't using and then only open the windows maybe for an hour at a time. Just my advice. Here I use my air conditioner during the day and heat at night. It's in the low 80s here when the sun is out but the temp drops fast when the sun goes down. Night temps are 50s sometimes as low as 30s. So I have to remember to switch the heat back on or we will all freeze! ::

Are highs are the mids 50's and now nights are getting into the 30's.

The warmest room in my entire house is the childcare room! The one I want the least amount of germs in. Maybe I'll go turn some of the vents closed.

they want the room the children are in to be 68. so get a thermometer hung in that room. Set the thermastate at what ever temp you need it to be and the childcare area still be 68. The whole house does not need to be 68.

And you will kill the germs with your sanitizing. If you really think you need fresh air in the room do it on a warmer day not every day.

how come it has to be 68 degrees. My house would be a sauna if it had to be 68 degrees (why I have no idea considering the insulation is awful and the house is 100 yrs old)

Not sure-just in our liscensing book.
