Some corrections (remember that policies change from province to province):

Not all women in Canada are entitled to 1 year of PAID maternity leave. You are only entitled to paid maternity leave if you paid into "Special EI Benefits" for 12 months prior to applying for mat leave!

How parental/paternal leave works varies from province to province. In my province hubby and I do not need to share leave - he is taking the full leave, I am taking none.

I beg to differ.....I have a son who is 29 (thirty next month) and I would never interfere with his and his wife's decisions.

I and my friends, who are the same age as I am, would never even think about giving stupid advice like what you mentioned. Not all women our age are like that, geez.

your correct, its shared. My dh went back to work after a couple of days. There is no way I would want him home for so long esp. if you need the money.

I find it funny that I was blasted by posters for stating the fact that the MIL is from a different generation and it probably wasn't the norm at that time for dads to stay home with the mom and baby.

If you read my original post, I even said that it wasn't right what she said. Please read the posts that are made carefully before posting back.

Does the MIL know that the poster actually makes more then the husband? Maybe she is generally worried about the father not being able to go back afterwards.

I'm not sure why the generation thing boggled peoples mind. I have a friend that when he was 30 his parents were in there 70's. You can't tell me there isn't a gap there. My own mother who was a RN but in nursing homes was dumbfounded when my husband was allowed in the room with me to have the baby. She couldn't believe it either that we had the baby in the same room that we were staying in.

So once again I didn't say it was alright for how she said it but it really could be something that she didn't understand.

Even though she didn't apologize the greatest at least she did-
