Ok I drafted this letter for family #2 please let me know what you think. Also I did make the mistake of telling family #2 that I don't expect them to have their child "sleep trained" by the time he starts care with me but also told them I would not rock children to sleep. STUPID ON MY PART...I know! One contradicts the other, I do not know what I was thinking when I made that response.

I think you are right to address the things you did. Stand your ground now and wait to see if they are going to be "trainable". LOL! they could end up being a great family. They could also NOT be willing to compromise or may want to continue to negotiate "special" in which case, you will then know BEFORE enrolling that they won't be a good fit. You might as well find out how they handle "no" now instead of later. kwim?

As far as your hours.. ... DON'T budge. That is YOUR family time and NO amount of money is worth compromising that.

You do also offer a tranisition or trial time right? So if you do take this family (#2) you will still be able to term after the trial period if you find out they lied about teaching their child to go to sleep without being rocked and walked.

Yes I did. The other family agreed to work on both sleep training their child and not holding him every time he was upset. She told me that she is more than willing to follow all my policies and respect my procedures. She also agreed to the Monday closing time of 4:30pm. I will sign this family on. That's great that she seemed to be willing to work with the baby so transition to care will be easier. Hope it works out well!

See? Giving someone a chance to comply is so much nicer than assuming everyone wants special. I think this mom will respect you more for being firm and honest about your expectations right up front.

IMO, that is how you build a solid reputation for professionalism.
