Part Time Rate?

LOL Scare me for a minute I was about to pull my hair out .

To me with PT only being two days I dont want to lose money by taking on a part time kid and then there I am losing money when I could have a full time kid. It would be okay if I was to charge a decent enough rate for PT but when you can only charge so much its almost not worth it to accept PT.

thats why FT takes priority over PT. YOu need to explain that to the families on day one.

If a family is PT and taking up a full time spot, then you will open that spot to the full time family and let the pt family go. ( i do it a little differently) BUT at the end of the day, it is all about money.

I would give the PT family the option to go full time or give up their spot...

I know the seasoned providers choose not to have part time kids, but from someone who has only been doing this a year, my part timers are great. I originally thought I wouldn't want any part timers. The fact that you are (in theory) losing money as they take up a spot, the irregular schedules etc all seemed like a poor idea. Unfortunately, with just starting up, part timers were what I got. Maybe I just got really lucky but I love them! Every day has a different combination of kids so every day in itself is different. For me it seemed to help break up the week. I loved having a 'slower' day in which we were able to focus more on one child.

Now of course, I have steadily picked up more clients and at times things do get hairy with ratios (I had to ship my daughter off just the other day as one of my toddlers turns 2 in 3! days but with my daughter I would have had too many). Obviously, this was a one time deal...the husband is training right now to be deployed and the dcm's mother became rather ill and therefore not able to babysit.

But again, I am really lucky, my 10 mth dcb comes 4 days a week, either m or f off, alternating weeks (grandma watches him on the opposite days), 2.5 dcg comes e/o week, 3 or 4 days (tuesday and e/o friday off), 2.5 dcg comes m/w, i have my own-18 mths and 4 years, b/a school 1st grader, had military fam (4 mths and ALMOST 2!). Will be starting a 14 mth old ft next week and a 3 year old boy who will start April 9 ft as my son will qualify as school age. I know it seems crazy but we just love it, every day is a bright new day. I do know with my willingness to work with peoples schedules (MUST be set, you pay the Friday before, and if something changes, too bad, so sad, no switching days) has brought me more clients. Just received word my 10 mth dcb is going to be a brother in November (whew, they are nuts) so baby will come here.

So, I believe if I had really just pushed for Full timers, I wouldn't really have any kids. My part timers helped break me in...I am sad to think that if I ever had to make the choice to take on a ftimer instead of my part timer, it would be my 2.5 yo dcg m/w...she hasn't seen her mom in a year, and we (as well as the other 2.5 year old girl) have all become really close. It is sad to think about losing her, but it is sad to think I would be losing $69 per week(to the tune of $3450 per year)....glad I haven't been faced with that yet!

I totally understand. The one part timer that I have feels like one of my kids now that I have been watching him for so long Id be sad if I couldnt watch him as well.
