If You Could Build The Perfect Daycare....

If you could build the perfect daycare (one you wouldn't live in), what would it look like? What features would it have? What could you not live without? This can include building structure, rooms, furniture, kitchen, bathroom, etc.

I ask because we're thinking about expanding this Spring/Summer. Right now we have 22 kids enrolled but can only have 12 here at a time. There are days when we're worrying if some kids will go home in time before others arrive so that we don't go over ratio. We have 6months up to 3rd graders and we're all on top of each other in a tiny 1,000sq foot house. We have about an acre of flat grassy land that's not being used, and we thought about building a second daycare so that we can separate our ages. We have a large group of one-year-olds and another group of three-year-olds and it's so hard to teach any of them anything because the young ones are bothering the older ones and vise versa.

We would love to separate the groups into two categories: potty trained and not potty trained. We're pretty sure the older kids would go in the new building so we can possibly turn it into a preschool. I have my Elementary Education degree and never got to use it before opening the daycare. I miss teaching and educating children.

We have the perfect location, 1/4 mile down the road from an elementary school, and the only daycare that's on the bus route. There aren't very many daycares within 10 miles really, and the word has been spreading like crazy about how good we are We've only been opened about 9 months, which scares me, but if we don't do something soon, once summer hits we're going to have to turn away 4 families that are all currently part time because of school-aged siblings that will need full time spots that we promised them. Plus we have 2 pregnant moms and I would like to have another baby in the next year if possible.

So all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! We're starting to contact contractors to get bids, but not completely sure what we want or are looking for. Thanks so much!

It's kind of hard to give input because I don't know specific group numbers...

12 kids in 1000 square feet sounds pretty crowded!

Can you add on to the house/building that you have?

If I could dream a little dream, there would be almost no plastic-all the furniture would be wood, ala Community Playthings. I would take elements of Regio Emelia environments, and my playground would use all natural materials as well.My curriculum would be art & nature based, so the decor and activities would totally reflect that.

This blog has some cool ideas:

I would "loop" my teachers, so that the children would have more consistency.

I don't think I'm helping, but thanks for letting me dream!

            <3 This!

This is exactly what I aim for everyday.

The only thing I would change, is I am in serious need for more indoor space. I'm trying to convince the hubby to build on another room for me.

I love Jenny's blog! This is another good one too...

Look under the educational directory....they show tons of centers that are all amazing.

If I could build the perfect daycare one thing I would have is a circle driveway in front of the building that would accomodate about 4 cars at a time at the entrance. It would be covered so parents could quickly get their kiddos out (and if it's raining they wouldn't get soaked), and inside the building. Plus...they wouldn't be able to linger too long because other cars would need to pull up under the cover and get their children in.
I'm thinking about opening a center in a couple of years and have lots of ideas but I guess it does depend on how many children you are going to keep and if you will have different classrooms for different ages and such with a teacher in each or if you're doing it alone with 12 children and can utilize each room for various activities. It's always fun to daydream and plan though.

Many years ago when I worked at a center (on a military base) they had a building that was H-shaped. One side of the H was for the babies, the other for the older kids. In the middle, connecting the two sides, was the kitchen and admin areas, which was accessible to both groups. In the openings between the two sides they had playgrounds, one for each group (separated by the admin area), that opened directly into their "side" of the building. They had separate entrances, which was a bit of a pain for anyone who had kids of different ages, but workable.

I don't know if that's helpful at all, but it's the only experience I have with center-based care.

Thats funny because that was the 1st thing I thought of. I pictured the commercial where the day care provider is a robot & twisted it to where the parents bringing the kids are robots......::::::::::::::

I HAVE the perfect daycare. For me.

I honestly wouldn't change a thing, I 've worked very hard to get where I am with my community, my families and how I do/run things. Besides the normal, everyday things that make this job tough sometimes, I am 100% happy with where I am, how I do things and the families I have in care.

Anything that comes along that I am not 100% happy with, I don't fuss much about because they are usually things I have NO power to change.

I want a tree house, so the older kids have a place to hang out but indoors. More storage and built in shelves with doors (so you can't see the mess) also nice and bright colors so its welcoming. Oh a large drop off area where everyone has a cubby and a gate to block out parents from crossing over to the other side. A paint area and a sensory table area too.

It would have a large tiled room with lots of windows so it felt like outdoors. It would be used for science grow plants, art activities It would need a water source. a place to display current projects a library section for science books

It woud look out on a nature area with lots of bird feeders and a water source with binoculars for the children to use.
                        It:: will wait

I would work closely with the Disney Imagineers and build a magical, but practical day care that would make my life easier and enthrall the children......ah....dreams......
