If you could build the perfect daycare (one you wouldn't live in), what would it look like? What features would it have? What could you not live without? This can include building structure, rooms, furniture, kitchen, bathroom, etc.
I ask because we're thinking about expanding this Spring/Summer. Right now we have 22 kids enrolled but can only have 12 here at a time. There are days when we're worrying if some kids will go home in time before others arrive so that we don't go over ratio. We have 6months up to 3rd graders and we're all on top of each other in a tiny 1,000sq foot house. We have about an acre of flat grassy land that's not being used, and we thought about building a second daycare so that we can separate our ages. We have a large group of one-year-olds and another group of three-year-olds and it's so hard to teach any of them anything because the young ones are bothering the older ones and vise versa.
We would love to separate the groups into two categories: potty trained and not potty trained. We're pretty sure the older kids would go in the new building so we can possibly turn it into a preschool. I have my Elementary Education degree and never got to use it before opening the daycare. I miss teaching and educating children.
We have the perfect location, 1/4 mile down the road from an elementary school, and the only daycare that's on the bus route. There aren't very many daycares within 10 miles really, and the word has been spreading like crazy about how good we are
We've only been opened about 9 months, which scares me, but if we don't do something soon, once summer hits we're going to have to turn away 4 families that are all currently part time because of school-aged siblings that will need full time spots that we promised them. Plus we have 2 pregnant moms and I would like to have another baby in the next year if possible.
So all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! We're starting to contact contractors to get bids, but not completely sure what we want or are looking for. Thanks so much!
