I have a diaper champ. I use the cheap garbage bags. I keep a solid (can type) car air freshener in the bottom. I also keep walmart sacks handy. I place the poo diapers in one of those and tie the top, before dropping it in the diaper champ. This has really helped keep the odor gone at my home.

gloves!
When I change poopy diapers I use gloves and then when I'm done i stretch the glove over the tightly wrapped diaper and then put in the garbage, I never smell any poopy diapers that way works awesome!- Flag

I did not purchase any of the conventional disposal systems. I hung a garbage can from the side of the changing table. Then I made the system so that after I placed a dirty diaper in a the can, I could pull up on the used bag and a new bag would automatically be available for the next use.- Flag

I have one and I am not a big fan of it. I have more clients in diapers right now so it fills up fast. I also dislike the fact that tiny red line to indicate you are running out of bag is so faint. I step on the pedal and toss the smelly diaper in I don't want to have to search for a the tiny red line each time. Long story short more than once I have run out of bag in the middle of a change and had more work to do because of it. Also the refills are not cheap. I am replacing mine with one that takes normal kitchen size bags and still seals out the smell.- Flag

The refills are too expensive for me. I dont have an issue with a trash can and a tight lid. I do keep air freshner and Lysol right next to the can (out of reach of course) that helps with stinkies.- Flag

For poop dipes, I am in the bag it up in a plastic shopping bag and toss it outside immediately club! Pee diapers are fine in the covered kitchen garbage which gets changed every day right after daycare closes... pee diapers start to stink within a few hours, especially when it's hot... some providers/their families are so used to the smell that they don't even notice.- Flag

I bought a diaper genie. Sparing the house from the stinky diaper smells is worth the cost of the bags. I like the idea of separating the diapers.- Flag

I had one way back about 10-12 years ago for my own child and it does work, but emptying it was a stinky job and eventually the whole container starts to stink too. I used it when I started daycare but the refills got too pricey. I know its a tax deduction but you are still laying out that money all year. Now I just buy the slightly scented diaper sacks on amazon, they contain the smell really well. They have probably improved the diaper genie itself since the one I had though - I remember I didn't get nearly as many diapers to a refill as it said you should, and every time you emptied it you used up a bit of that plastic that they probably count in the # of diapers its supposed to contain. So its more cost effective to NOT empty it till full but I would want to empty it every day so I don't think I could use the diaper genie now.- Flag

That's a good idea... but we only go through about 1 loaf of bread per week. So, let's say about 50 loaves of bread per year. I end up with probably 15 poop dipes per week... so this wouldn't work for me.- Flag

I didn't want to do the diaper genie because my friend used it for her kids and yuck pushing a dirty or wet diaper into the top nasty.......even if the lid pushed it down just think of the germs and money wasted on refills.
I started out with the diaper champ, $10 at a baby store, looked new. I loved this because I could use any grocery store bag which I had plenty of since I shop for many kids to eat and us. BUT I had to stop using it because I have some in cloth diapers and I use wet wipes, not cloth wipes. Wet wipes can be dropped into the diaper champ but they flip right back up and out because they're wet and sticky until a dry diaper flips into the can. SO a few times of having a double touch a wet wipe I changed to a small step can which I use grocery bags for. Any poopy diaper goes directly into a grocery bag and tied and tossed into the foyer. I don't leave the room but I don't smell it.- Flag

I've used a Diaper Genie but was not happy with the odor containment, then a Diaper Champ but wasn't happy with the way stuff got stuck in the "flipper", mostly use grocery bags that the parents donate and walk them to my kitchen step on can which works the best for us. I empty it at least once per day so odor is not a big issue.
A few weeks ago I did find a plastic step on diaper pail from Meijer at a garage sale for a $1. I line it with a small trash bag and just throw the grocery bags in it. It has a large rubber like seal on the lid and seams to contain the odor well and works well in the basement diaper changing area. It is made by Cosco (not Costco).I see little people.- Flag

The Diaper Champ is amazing. You simply use regular trash bags and it completely seals in the smell.
I was doing the plastic bag and throw it outside method for BM's and a regular lidded can for pee. But, I wanted to not have to change out my regular lidded can trash bag every single day. With the Diaper Champ, I change it every 2-3 days (and that's with six 2-year-olds in diapers!). happyface
They can be spendy when new, so look on craigslist or on local garage sale sites for a Diaper Champ. I bought mine used for $10.
