I supply gloves here because most parents 'forget' them. What I do is the old string through the coat except I make my own because I can't find them anywhere. I use good thick yarn and attach an end to each glove then feed through the arms and across the back of the coat. They can still come off but not nearly as often. As for waterproof, I haven't found a completely waterproof glove/mitten yet!

I make mitted sweatshirts and pop them over their coats. If you have mittens on them they will stay on under the mitted sweatshirts.

          are your mitted sweatshirts waterproof?

I'm glad someone mentioned this though because my daycare kids are normally very poorly dressed for the winter. I plan to keep some backup items on hand and not even deal with trying to explain that a tiny summer skirt is not appropriate for outdoor snow play.

Mine aren't but you can put a layer of material in between the cuffs. If you look at the picture you can see how the bottom of the wrist is double backed.

Or you can put thin waterproof gloves over their hands and pop the sweatshirt over it.

Line them with fleece...that's what I'd do. A cloth diapering trick. Fleece is very water-resistant (not proof though).

Knit sweaters are a great idea. I can't knit but I can sew so I think I will sew a few fleece mitted sweaters. Great idea!

I have 4 1yos this year and look forward to not putting on mitts every 20 seconds.

If you are interested in making and stocking mitted sweatshirts...buy in Febuary at the mart stores. This is usually the time when they are discounting down their sweat stuff.

One thing to check is the armpit to armpit width and the width of the sleeves from shoulder down to wrist. You don't want "skinny" sweatshirts. You need the additional room. You also want sweatshirts that are a little long armed if you can find them.

I use a much bigger size than the kid wears. My kids who are size three/four wear a mitted sweatshirt that is a 7/8. My kids who are size five/six wear one that is 9/10 or 11/12.

BUY BIG... you can always size it down.

Don't worry about what colors they are or the boy/girl design. Get the ones that are boxy and have wide arms.

Nanny, I can't get your photos to come up - I'm very curious as to what they look like.

I found the ones with long cuffs are the best. I found a pair at a church rummage sale for my son for a quarter and we used them for years until they just wouldn't fit any more.

They are hard to find and my son's were little knitted ones, not water proof.

BTW - I found these on the net - not sure if any of you have tried them or not: http://www.bestdressedtot.com/girl-long-mitten.html

For those of us who don't sew , I use men's tube socks (black if possible -- they look less like socks that way : to go over top of the mitts that parents provide. The socks reach all the way up to most toddlers' armpits, and then I put their coat/snowsuit over them. They can't get those things off no matter how hard they try!

If the mitts under the socks aren't waterproof, you could probably put a ziploc baggie over the mitts and under the socks (but obviously, you'd have to watch the kid like a hawk, just in case).

I've used tube socks too before I came up with the idea to make the sweatshirts. The problem with them is they start to fall towards the tip of the fingers and start creating a big flap at the tips.

Nanny, I'm not quite seeing what you are doing to the shirts. Are you just cutting off the sleeves to a good length and stitching the ends closed?
