I use to keep the tv on in the background in the play room and livingroom also. I noticed that my 2 year old and 3 year old won't play so well when its on. They tend to want to just sit and watch tv. I have started turning it off. In livingroom I will put it on music channel a lot now. Just wondering if its the same at your house. I do let them curl up on couch in mornings and watch tv.

Im considered a small one here. I notice they play better if there is no background noise. I play music at nap and if we are dancing but other than that we have no background noise on. On days I forget they are crazed. The moment I turn it off they settle.- Flag

My rule is that I don't allow two things at once:
No play and eat
No play and watch tv
No tv and eat
No tv and play
When they eat they just eat
When they play they just play
When they watch TV they just watch TV
The value of each thing you do with the kids decreases when it's diluted with other things going on at the same time.- Flag

I allow tv in the mornings (usually 10 minutes or less) while my kids and a few others are eating breakfast and we wait for everyone to arrive. This is bc I don't like the other kids downstairs while I have kids upstairs eating. I don't have enough eyes for that. ::
While I prep lunch, I turn on the tv for 15 minutes or so. I prefer that the kids sit while I am out of the room. I can see them from where I am, but its better for all if they are seated.
Usually I use one dvd for the entire week. We watch in bursts as described above and finish by Friday.- Flag

TV is on here only in the very early mornings (6am-7am) while my early birds arrive, then it gets turned off. The only other time that I turn it on is when we play something like signing time, or Preschool Prep but then it's really only my older toddlers (3+) that watch it. Once they start losing interest or it's been 15 minutes I turn it off.
Occasionally we have a special Friday where I'll play a whole movie (or try to anyway) but as soon as the kids start talking or playing I figure there's no need to keep it on. The next movie day or rainy day we'll finish the movie.- Flag

We do have TV (typically a theme movie) during "clean up for going home time" (I change them into fresh clothing, wash faces and style hair. It is one of my niche things).
As soon as the thing flips on, they all run to the "ready rug". :::
: I then mop floors and await arrivals. Think "Pavlov's dogs".

I do the same thing with the music channel on tv. I think most cable companies have them now. The TV is on during arrivals and departures because it helps the chaos level that happens when the door is constantly being opened and everyone gets excited that it could be their mom. But other than that, I turn it to the music channel, or turn it off.- Flag

TV is on in the early mornings while kids arrive...it's on the news. Kids don't pay any attention to it. I'm usually in the kitchen fixing breakfast when they arrive. I let them all knock and walk in. So I don't have to go down and let them in. They all take shoes off at the bottom steps and I take them in to watch hands then breakfast time. By 8am it goes off. I turn it back on when we come back from playing outside and the kids can sit quietly and watch disney while I fix lunch but some will play some will watch. If I find that there is to much getting up and down and not enough watching I turn music on and turn the tv off. There are days it stays off completely. I have one little guy who now wants to watch it all the time and looks to play with the controller. He wants to turn the tv on and off. Once that happens everyone losses it. So far this week bc I haven't had many kids and the one who likes tv is only her 4 hrs for the day 2 times a wk and he hasn't been complaining about it.Once it's a problem I solve it. No tv.

I do the same as nannyde. Only I don't have early birds here (thank goodness) but my own kids are usually up at 7am so the tv MAY be on around 7:30 for about a half hour.
For those of you with Ipod touch or Iphone have you tried "Pandora Radio" under the apps selections. Its great and there is no need to purchase special CDs etc because its a continous play of whatever music your prefer. You just need an adaptable player for your device. Its a fantastic app I wouldn't be without it.- Flag

Personally I just buy or ask for my family's and client's kid's CD's and upload them onto my iTunes on my computer and create playlists. I have Apple TV so then I play the music on my living room's TV. It streams whatever you have on your iTunes onto your Apple TV device, even movies. If you want something specific that no one else has then yes you do have to go out and buy the music but I'd rather do that and stream it through Apple TV than pay for Pandora's monthly subscription and not actually own the music, or playto the music for the kids with commercials.
I do like Pandora, don't get me wrong. When it's just me I use Pandora on my iPhone and connect it to our living room's system. I just don't like playing music for the kids and then hitting a commercial and having to wait until it's over to get to the next song.- Flag

Leaving the TV on in the background is a big pet peeve of mine. Either watch it or turn it off......wait, I think I said that to my husband last night- Flag
