    Thumb ****ing

What do you do with thumb ****ers? Not just when we are tired but alot of the day. Can't do activities because thumb is in our mouth, won't eat but will **** thumb even though child is hungry, etc. Washing hands does not help. As soon as we are done washing and drying thumb goes back in. I can't stand at the sink all day long. Child is 2.5 years old.

Talked to liscensng about it-they actually said the mouth is very clean and they wouldn't worry about it. I had called worried about the germ factor with colds and such. They said if I wanted to use hand s*****er between regular washing but then the child is ****ing on the hand s*****er. They said I could, wouldn't have to, but I could have parents fill out forms allowing hand s*****er to be used.

So what do you do with a chronic thumb ****er? Like I said I can't stand and wash hands all day.

I'm interested in the answers to this too. I have a 2 year old who always has his fingers in his mouth, always. It grosses me out because he will play with toys and touch everything, so his spit is on everything. I can't wash his hands a million times a day either.

I have two children from the same family that **** thumbs. One is in the 1st grade. I've had her since she was just 5 weeks old. Now her sister who is 3 years old also ****s her thumb. When I've brought this subject but to the parent, her response is well it's a family trait. They have step sisters that are 14 and 16 years old and both still **** their thumbs when they are going to sleep.
So question is, is it handed down from generation to generation? Both of the younger girls are already started to have problems with their teeth being pushed forward.

Does anything else go along with the thumb ****ing, like touching a certain material, twirling hair, rubbing ear etc.? My kids that ****ed thumbs always had something to go with it, and when that was taken away or blocked then the thumb ****ing stopped.

I've seen that quite a bit. I've had hair twirlers, cloth rubbing (especially tags... silk tags), cloth ****ers, nail biters, nail flickers, etc.

I've never had a masterb8ter but I have heard that thumb ****ing and rubbing goes along with that sometimes too.

Putting the mitted shirts on gives them something that blocks and is easily removable for washing if they are a cloth ****er. Cloth over the hands is very calming for kids with fixation issues. It's warm and something good to touch that they can't tear up. It works well with thumb ****ers, pickers, and twirlers.

I would need to see a picture of these because I can't visualize it and what I'm visualizing wouldn't work because I'm picturing the child not doing anything all day because there hands are enclosed in a sock type thing all day.

                    Anyone have a picture?

                      Nah

It takes a few minutes for them to figure it out.

My son ****ed his thumb until he was 11. He only did it in his sleep. He never did it during the day, not even as a baby. for some reason, as soon as his little head hit the pillow in went his tumb. So it resulted in $8000 worth of dental work that he is still in the middle of. Braces and headgear at night.......ugh

Don't underestimate a kid....you'd be surprised what they are capable of mastering even if they are wearing a mitted sweatshirt. My thumb ****er snapped her own pants, put her own shoes on, colored and played Barbie dolls with ease.

It depends on what I'm blocking.

If the kid is a super cloth ****er then I go for super thick. I want their spit in something I can wash not the cot bottoms of my Jmasons.

If it's something like fingernail picking I would go with just a long sleeved tshirt style.

If it's a thumb block I would start with a thin shirt and if they still persisted I would move it to a thicker one. YMMV because MOST ****ers want skin to skin so the thin would work. Some ****ers want the thumb or fingers to go into the grove that has developed over time as their mouth has grown around whatever they are ****ing.

If it's a GROVE thing... go thick. If it's skin to skin you can manage it with thin.

If it's a Masterb8ter thing then go thick.

                            Nose pick go thick.

We have a lot of mitted sweatshirts and shirts here because we use them in place of gloves/mittens for our walk. We pop them over their coats so we don't have to put gloves on. In the spring and fall we use them on the cool fifty degree mornings when it's too warm for full winter gear but cool enough to need a thick warm layer over hands and trunk.

I already have so many made up in advance that whatever size the kid is we have one already ready. I also do left handed and right handed ones. If the kid only ****s one handed you just need to do one side to start. If they adapt with the other hand then go bilateral.
