    Getting ready for family daycare

I think you should do what you are comfortable with. So if you want to get started by working on your upper level, then go for it. You will have parents coming in to interview, so the whole house needs to be in tip-top shape anyways. Does your state allow for you to care for a few children before getting licensed? I am in MO and I am watching 4 kids right now (unrelated to me) while I am waiting to get everything for licensing. I am so glad I did this. It has allowed me to figure out what type of advertising works best, what arrangement of toys/furniture/shelving works best for the kiddos, and has helped me to feel more confident about the service I provide. Plus I am getting some money now which is really coming in handy as I think of more & more stuff we need to get!!

    Good luck to you!

      Cost of a Daycare

Sorry I haven't properly introduced myself yet but here's an article about the costs of starting a daycare: Cost to Start Up a Daycare. It might be helpful for some of you. Good luck with your new daycares!

        $$ Questions$$

I have a full time job right now and we need my income to support our family. I plan on opening my daycare soon. I only need 4 FT children including money for taxes to pay my bills. I hope to get that many kids in the first 1 - 2 months. My quesiton is do you think this is fesible? How much money should I save up before I start? It would be nice to have 3 month salary saved up, but that would never happen as we live paycheck to paycheck mostly. I would get a part time job but my husband works all sorts of shifts and doesnt find out his schedule till the day of sometimes.
This is my dream job since I was in first grade. I'm not kidding, remember in elementary we had to write what we wanted to be when we grow up and then they mailed it to us years later. "To be a daycare lady"
That is what I wrote on mine!

That's so cool that you're finally going to realize your dream!
How fast you fill up really depends on where you are right now in the country, and how the economy is by you. Some daycares are are losing kids like crazy right now, others are thriving. I would be letting EVERYONE you know about your daycare, and if possible have your kids lined up before you even quit your current job.
          Best wishes!

Help with starting a home day care in Missouri

My friend and I are both interested in starting a home day care together. We have looked at all the state websites and are now confused on the difference between being registered and licensed. We just want to be registered so that we can provide care to 8 children between the two of us; that would be 4 per provider.

We are looking for any suggestions on what to do? We are both unemployed and have decided that we can do this together but need a place to start.

            Any suggestions?

The Health department tells me that once I become licensed I can not watch from my home that I have to open a building. PLEASE any help on home child care is appreciated

Well, to get the word out you could have some business cards printed and take them around to doctor's offices or leave a few at any place that attracts a lot of parents with kids. A brochure that outlines what you can offer as a daycare provider and your rates would be good too. I wouldn't spend a lot on printing - just keep it simple because most printed small business advertising is highly disposable and usually gets thrown out quickly. Local cultural centers and recreation facilities would be a good place to pin up your business card too. Mention your business to everyone you meet and word of mouth should help you too. Also talk to your local daycare supplies company because they probably have some good ideas too. Good luck.

                                Expanding to On-site child care

I live in Washington state and operate a in home daycare. I have an oppurtunity to expand into on-site child care. The problem I have been running into is finding an insurance company to offer liabilty insurance for this venture. If you have any leads it will be greatly appreciated. Steph
