I started an 8 month old baby girl last week. The mom was my sons teacher in the 4th grade. The baby was supposed to come on Mondays and Thursdays. The mom called me last night and said that she was going to have her mom watch her instead at her house because there has been a flu going around and a couple of kids have died I guess and she's stressed out that her baby will get sick in a daycare setting. She said that she would call me when she's older (1 year) and see if I have room then. It wasn't a huge shock for me because when I was talking with her before, she had told me that they don't take her anywhere for fear of germs. The other teachers where she works wanted to see the baby and she wouldn't take her to the school either. Just wished she would have figured that out before she started her here last week. UGH!

Not a good start .... it's obvious this mother is not ready for a group setting type of care.... I find more common lately to find kids ready but parents that are not ready for daycare...Have stumbled in a few of those parents and they've proven to be a complete wast of my time. Be prepared... this mother may place her baby in a baby sitter instead .- Flag

UGH!: Sorry but that's silly. It's actually BETTER for her immune system to be exposed and gain immunity to germs. She is going to be sick a LOT when she ever does get around other people.

What I wish is with the news media is that we would get more details. Did these people in fact have flu shots? That I would love to know.
This mom was very timid from the getgo. I knew when she said that they hadn't taken her anywhere that that was a red flag. This was before this flu "scare" surfaced. So, that along with the people that have died pushed her over the edge. Just really glad that I didn't turn anyone away to take her.- Flag

Does she actually believe that all those nasty germs and viruses she is exposed to every day at school as a teacher are somehow not brought home to her baby?
Some people amaze me with their logic ::
I have a DCM right now who told me half her staff is out with the flu. Her child got sick on Friday and was home. The child came back this morning and told me that mom told them that they got sick from a specific child at daycare......- Flag

BC, that was my thought exactly!!! As a teacher, she's going to be bringing home more germs than that kid is going to get anywhere. She teachers 1st grade too, so those kids are not alot different than the kids here. Not good wiping their noses, covering a cough etc. That's okay, when she calls me when the girl is a year, I may or may not have an opening. I dont' need another one that blames every illness on me. I already have 1, don't need more.
Daycarediva. That's what my husband said too. He said that's going to be the sickest child when she does end up going to daycare and guess who's going to get blamed for it.- Flag

Actually my teachers children are my healthiest kids!!! Rarely sick and if they do get sick they are the ones that actually get well the fastest. Also, my teachers are rarely sick-even with colds.
The ones that work in offices are the ones that seem to be sick more. I wonder if its because they are in contact with the public more and more germs coming in and out.
Maybe the teachers bodies fight off germs better because they are working with the same children everyday and the same staff? I know I was extremely sick last year-sickiest in all the years I ever have been. I had a slew of new kids and figured it was all the new germs in my house/body. I usually have only a new one every three years or so-last year it was quite a few. Each day is a fresh start

UGH the dad just came and picked up her bag with extra diapers/clothes etc in it and also to pay me for the day I had her last week. They paid me for the 1 day last week and 2 days this week that she's not coming. He said that they never wanted her to leave the house, but they didn't have anyone lined up to come to their house. Oh thanks, would have been nice to know that. Nothing like feeling used. He said it was nothing against me, but they never wanted her in a setting like mine with so many kids. Oh thanks again. So put her in her little bubble and don't let her out. But, don't expect that when you feel she's old enough that I will be willing to take her.- Flag

Oh I think that they are definately terrified of the germs for sure. Like I said, they have taken the baby nowhere. Not even to friends houses so that they could see her. The grandma is going to come over 4 days a week and then they have another girl that's going to come the other day. I should have told her that I've been doing this 12 years with tons of babies and I haven't lost one yet to the flu. Ticks me off because I gave them time to come and visit me during my Christmas break and then she wanted to come over again Sunday night to tell me that she was quiting. Don't frickin waste my time. If you have issues, then be honest. Taught me another lesson. If I'm on vacation, I don't care what the issue is, I'm not making time for ya. Ticks me off. If grandma can watch her now, why couldnt' she last week? UGH! Makes me more mad the more I think about it. I won't have room for her whenever she calls me back I can guarantee that. The thing that irritates me too is that I know these people, she was my sons teacher. Not like I'm a stranger to her.- Flag

I once had a mom pull her child because she decided to have her go somewhere that was not a child care setting with so many kids ( I only cared for six kids.) .
She said she was getting sick too much and she could not afford to be off from work. She said she had gotten strep and also pink eye. I did not have anyone else that had been sick.
Kicker was this mom cleaned at a hospital. She would come in her scrubs and pick up the child. Can you imagine the germs she was bringing home!- Flag

That is crazy! Yea I'm sure there are no germs on those scrubs! Just like my mom, a teacher of the 1st grade. I'm sure she has no little germy hands touching her all day! EVerything happens for a reason right? Maybe she would have been a pain in the ass. I am almost 100% sure though that when this baby turns 1 year that I will not have room- Flag

So true! I worked in a daycare setting for 14 years. I rarely ever get sick, besides the common cold. But whenever there was a new teacher they would get sick fairly quickly after starting. I always said I was immune to everything; I was exposed to just about everything. Besides, aren't immunizations live viruses-well most of them I think.?
