Well I think I finally hit the bottom with these naptime pickups. A week or so ago I had one of my dcb's picked up by grandma and she came during naptime when she was supposed to come later. Talked to mom and told her that I wasn't happy about it. This week, a different dcb was being picked up by grandparents. They were going to pick up at 2:00. Said it was okay because I know they live almost an hour away and they were coming to town for another reason. Didn't feel right telliing them no, what are they to do they can't go back home and come later being so far away. Well, had dcb up and shoes on waiting on couch for 20 minutes and the mom calls and said they got hung up at the doctors office, that they wouldn't be there until 3:00. So I put him back to bed. Don't think he slept. Grandpa came in at 3:00 loud of course. Told him that EVERYONE was sleeping and that I would go get him. No more. No more pickups between 1-3:30 unless it's an emergency. UGH

I don't care what the reason or excuse is, nobody picks up during nap time (1-3pm). If a child needs to be picked up between 1:01 and 2:59, too bad - the parent needs to be here BEFORE 1pm to pick up! -

Can you request they come to a different door if your kids nap, say in the living room where the main door is the parent would be coming into? The licensing regulations in my state require we have an open door policy, so I can't dictate when parents can come check on or pick up their kids, but that open door can be the back door.Comment

My door is the back door. The thing is, they told me yesterday 2:00 so I got him out of a sound sleep, changed him, got his shoes on and then they called after 20 or so minutes and said they wouldn't be there until 3:00. So the poor dcb did not get a proper napComment

Nap time pick ups ****!! Sorry to be so blunt. At my daycare it doesn't happen much thank goodness. But, when it does I change the child and put their shoes on while they are asleep. Most are young enough not to wake up when I do this. And when the parent gets here I pick up the child and take them directly outside to the parent so they don't wake up the whole group. This works best for the children so they all continue their much needed naps. For me though, I am waiting and clock watching and listening for their cars. I may get frazzled, but not as frazzled as I would be if everyone is awake before they are ready!Comment

My state also requires me to have an open door policy bt that doesn't mean you have to deal with nap time pick ups.
It is in my handbook that parents MUST schedule all pick ups and drop offs at any other time other than nap time.
If it happened at nap time, I would HAVE to give their child to them as per the open door policy but it would be the last time as I would term them because they broke a rule and disrespected my policies.
I know most would say, "what if it can't be helped and the child has an appt or something"....well in the two decades I have been doing child care, it hasn't happened yet so I guess it can be helped.
If you are going to allow it, I would never get a child ready until the parent actually showed up though as I have heard a hundred stories about a parent saying they were coming only not show up and then the whole daycare is off schedule.Comment

I never take anyone's word for it. They say they'll be picking up Little Johnny early, I say I'll believe it when I'll see it. I don't wake everyone up from nap ... EVER ... for the same reasons that you describe now. I don't need a grumpy 3yo waking up the rest of the kiddos only to have the child-picker-upper show up way later than expected (usually after nap is over). And I don't allow nap pick-ups either so good for you. It's WAY too difficult, messes everything up.Comment

Well my thought was to get him up and have him ready because it typically whomever comes to pick up, comes in and is loud. I figured if I had him ready then I could just basically whisk him right out the door. Yesterday was the last straw though. Not to mention I have a dog and when soeone knocks at the door she barks.Comment

I haven't had any issues with people coming early, in fact exactly the opposite :P. I totally agree with PP though, you can't be coming in and disrupting all of the kids naptime because you can't get your schedule straight.Comment

I dont wake kids to get ready if there is a nap time pickup. I have the parents text me when they are 10 minutes away.Comment

two things that I am doing when parents tell me that they are picking up early..
1. I will text or call DCP or who ever is picking up and let them know that I am getting kid up now and getting them ready. I wait to get a response and if I don't the child is left sleeping until they arrive.
2. If the parent tells me they are picking up at 1:00 and they are late, I will resort to my $1.00 per min late fee....Comment

You all should not be providing care. I understand your rules but things happen and above all else it is my kid and I am thankful it is an open door policy in my state. If I showed to get my kid and was not allowed in the state would be called as well as the police and my attorneyComment

You all? Actually I never said that I wouldn't let them take him when they arrived. I said that I can talk with them and have them pickup either before or after naptime. If they were at my door, I would NOT turn them away. Actually the one time, the dcm told me that I should have told her mother (grandma) to come back later that he was sleeping, so relax.Comment

Words spoken by someone who CLEARLY has NO CLUE what it's like to be a child care provider with no opportunity for down time unless the children in care nap. You would not be turned away at my door if you showed up at nap time, you WOULD however be handed an immediate termination notice...........my house my rules. Scheduling things around children's rest time should not be that big a deal and if it is, here's the door.Comment
