    School Agers

Do you feel that it is your responsibility to entertain them or do you feel that you should supply the toys and they should entertain themselves?

For sure I dont think I need to entertain them... but I do have activities for them as well... I always have open crafts for all ages, two computers and older books and activity books...

They sould always have something to do so they are not on your butt all the time too...

I definitely wouldn't entertain them. I don't entertain the little kids.

I don't take this age group because their supervision level is SO high.

My son is eleven and he still plays toys. He's an amazing toy player. He will play with any aged kid.. he just wants to play.

I did school age last Summer and said never again! I'll stick with my toddlers and preschoolers! I find it very difficult to incorporate that age group. So, kudos to you! But, I definitely would expect them to entertain themselves. Maybe if you give them "jobs" to help out with the littles and a reward system?

Not only do I love to entertain them, they entertain me!!!
I love to talk to them, love to hear them talk to each other.
The things they say are so cool. They love to play what they call "Imagination"
It's where they imagine themselves as carnival workers. They make tickets, make their rides,(usually out of boxes or whatever they can find) charge "money" for their rides, assign duties and rules all by themselves. I supply the paper, markers etc.
They have made up their own plays and concerts complete with costumes and props. We have done a lemonade stand and other fundraisers to help fund their activities.
They love to write, direct and star in puppet shows for the little kids.
They organize, write and hide all the clues for our treasure hunts for the little kids.
Yup, I love my school age kids!!!!
I did have a few over the years that definitely didn't appreciate me or like it here but most of the kids I have had are very good.

I have to say that this age can be more challenging and sometimes you do feel the need to entertain them. However, I know that I can't possibly do this and encourage them to play with the younger kids (like siblings would) and to be the helper and teacher and be the example in showing the younger ones new things. They love doing this...reading, doing puzzles and even pretend play with those younger. I never have a S/A expressing boredom It is important to make them feel a sense of self worth and to let them see the value in nurturing the younger ones. They will even ask when I'm picking them up from school, if so and so will be there or is awake from nap. They totally love the younger dcks and it is reciprocated. This in itself validates me watching the multi age groups! It is so rewarding!
