Do You Think The Weather Affects The Behavior Of The Children?

So, after a morning of kids being destructive, fighting, and not being content with doing anything for more than 10 seconds, just wondering, do you believe the weather plays into their behavior.

I do, whether it is stormy or rainy, the kids just seem to act up so much more. If the weather men are calling for thunderstorms or snow storms, their behavior seems to go haywire. A full moon...oh my watch out....their behavior goes on the brink.

I just wonder what it is that causes this. My sister worked in a nursing home and she said the same things about the elderly when there were storms in the air. Just what that connection is I don't know what or why, just that it is there.

Interesting subject. I know cloudy weather makes people more depressed in the jet stream area of the country like Seattle and Rochester. I would imagine more electricity in the air must make children uneasy. Between weather and food I think they both have a lot to do with our dispositions.

I agree and so does my mother who teaches in public school. And don't get me started on full moons! Lol

I have done home day care for 25 years...with a three year gap when I taught pre-school in a big center. The teachers all compared the fact that our kids were DREADFUL on certain days and we tracked it to the weather. 100% of the time, the kids were worse behaved when the weather was thundery. It never, ever failed.

I think it probably has to do with the underdevelopment of tthe brain. They are still really using the lymbic part of their brains, which is a more instinctual, fight or flight response to things. We adults have adapted enough to know that weather isn't a big deal usually, so we kind of tune it out. They sense the changes and act kind of like animals do. That's MY theory. Ha!

I think I'm used to the "wild and crazy" of daycare so I don't really notice behavior unless it's really out of character and they have never behaved badly all at once. (Knock on wood!)

I notice it with my own children more. Full moons especially!!!

And during this summer I've noticed when it's sunny out, they want to stay inside and play video games. When it's raining, they want to go skateboarding!?

Same here! I just don't understand it. Well, not necessarily play video games because I don't allow dc kids to play, but true with my own ds. As a whole the older kids don't want to go out when it's nice.

When the weather dips below 10F they all want to go play in the snow.

And honestly here, it seems worse when we have a new moon as opposed to a full moon. That is basing my judgement off of 3 school aged boys. We shall see (I'll have to pay attention) now that school has started up and they dynamic of their behavior will change.
Give a little love to a child, and you get a great deal back.

YES! YES! YES! I really believe it does! Not just storms, but rainy, cloudy, or snowy days when the sun isn't out. And full moons, too. Today they were awful and of course it was dreary out. Finally got them all ready to go out, potty breaks, shoes on, last one out of time-out (), jackets on and zipped up. And then, open the door to see it's drizzeling out. It wasn't raining yet during am snack (we go out after snack), so I dismissed them, directing them to put their shoes on. Then I was too busy trying to stop their fighting and yelling and getting them ready to go out that I didn't notice it had started raining in the meantime. They didn't seem to mind, though. They just grabbed the musical instruments and toy drums and made as much noise as they could, while two others continued their arguing, and the rest started going through the centers like a tornado. And there I stood wanting to RUN as fast as I could away from there :: But they all went to sleep pretty quickly at nap time, which was really nice!

I only notice a difference if we can't go outside. Other than that it's the same regardless of weather or the moon.

Definitley. I think it SEEMS like it is related to the weather, but in reality it is because they cannot get out and burn that pent-up energy.

I agree with this! We have very mild weather here, but when they are stuck inside for long, it seems to make a difference!

For some reason, I have noticed that windy days also cause more exuberant behavior...not necessarily "bad"... just lots of energy!

I have talked to several of my parents who are teachers and this is true in their classrooms as well. Weather impacts behavior!

Oh my goodness!!!! This is the third day of cloud cover and it is certainly taking a toll on everyone. They can't pay attention, there is only one volume (extra loud), no one can sit still, etc. I want my sunshine back!!!

Yes I do. In fact, I asked my mom this same thing years ago when I first started daycare. She was a 1st grade teacher and she said most definitely the children are in different moods when the weather is gloomy
