    California Law

Has anyone heard of the new law trying to be passed in California. Heard a bleep on the news yesterday. Here is my understanding.

If you employ a nanny/babysitter, you will have to legally provide breaks and a lunch time for them. You will need to bring in another person to relieve the person taking a break/lunch during that time. Also, I think it said that the nanny/babysitter now be paid minimum wage rates.

I do not know if this applies to childcare providers. Has anyone else heard of this law?

They just voted for it yesterday. I sooo want to move out of California (born and raised in the same county. Family have been here for almost 100 years.) I can't stand what we have become.

AB 889-does not apply to daycare providers

It's absolutely ridiculous! But it does not apply to daycare providers.

Oh good, this would totally ruin us. Have any idea where I can find something on it where it says that it doesn't apply to us? I have trouble following legal jargon .

Are you talking about center employees? ( I thought that was the norm :confused

          Or private/home arrangements?

I am not in CA but it all seems to have a trickle down effect so I am curious....

I'm pretty sure that she's talking about family childcare homes. Daycare centers have to treat their employees just like any other employee in the state ... family childcare providers are exempt from breaks, lunches, minimum wage etc. (I can't even pee without being able to supervise the children) if your the owner/licensee but I'm pretty sure that if I were to hire an assistant I'd have to pay minimum wage and give breaks and lunches ... anyone? I've only had my family ever help out so I don't have experience with "real" hired assistants.
