    Preschool Discount

I have never offered a pre school discount. I have had many parents ask. This year I have a girl attending a afternoon preschool M-TH. She would leave my care @12:15 and NOT return when school let out at 3:00.

Her mother asked for a discount.

II have never had a child attend preschool more than 2 days per week for 3 hours. This amount of time away from daycare does seem to warrrent a discount.

    This was my plan
20.00 school day (care from 8-12)
    30.00 NO school day
5.00 an additioal afterschool hours (only with advanced notice if I have room) --I do have some drop in clients.
(regular full tiem rate is 135.00 or $27 perday)

She likes to prepay so she responed with another plan that would be less variable.

I *think* it fair but I wanted to see if any of you would agree with this....

Hi *MsMe* – I was thinking about your rate reduction and I do greatly appreciate you being willing to work with me since *DCB* will not be there in the afternoon except for Fridays. I was thinking how that would work for pre-paying and such, so I thought of a compromise that might be easier if you would like to give this some thought. I believe you said $20 per day when he goes to school and $30 per day when he doesn’t – equaling $110 per week when he goes as normal to school M-TH. How about $25 per day no matter what? That equals $125 per week. I would pay that all the time - normal weeks, holidays, etc. and then still have the week of vacation when I don’t pay (that I usually take around Christmas/New Years). For budgeting and pre-paying, that is easier for me & it still saves me $10 per week.

I tried to figure things up because I definitely want to be fair to you. The easy way to look at it is $10 less for 4 afternoons that he won’t be there. But looking at the bigger picture, it looks like there are 39 weeks of school yet and 21 no school or holiday days – including Christmas and spring break. That would leave 18 days extra that are paid for snow cancellations, etc. & if at any time you ever felt it was not enough; I would go back to the $135. I greatly appreciate all that you and *Ms. X* do and certainly would not want to move DCB – he loves you guys!! I need the security of knowing that he can just stay with you if his afternoon school day is cancelled & I need you in the summer all day every day again (& will return to the $135 per week) Let me know what you think – otherwise I will just keep paying the $135 now. $10 doesn’t sound like much, but it does add up for you and for me.

    Thanks so much!

If i agree to this I agree to always have a spot for him.

    * i think it may leave 16days not 18, but math has never been a strong point for me and I don't belive we have ever had even 16 snow days. EVER. So that really isnt a big deal.

Can you afford to take a pay cut in order to leave a full time spot open but not receive full time pay? I think that would be the big thing. Do you want to accommodate this family?

I was in same situation. I explained it to mom like this.

"I am holding the spot for your child" If you want to pay a discounted rate, this will just be for days the child is in school. If your child has off school you must ask in advance if i have room. If I do I will be more then happy to take your child for an additional fee."

They pay for the spot. You cannot possibly fill the spot from 12-3 or save room when days off for free? Its a spot. I would not bend on this, unless you totally needed the money and she was pullling ( even then i may not) because she cannot tell explain her rationale to you, for your business.

Tell her if she can get someone to come 12-3 and pay for that, you will think about it. LOL

          Yes and Yes.

I am jsut tring to be firm and not let her 'call thes shots' I know this family loves my care and respects me ( her letter said it and she does show it all year round). I jsut don't want word to 'get out' I am giving discounts. I think this is a different situation than my other preschoolers, but you know how paretns are.

I would never start a child with with sched for this type of payment plan. I have had him since a baby and I am extreemly bonded with this child.....

Can I ask her to keep this payment option to herself?

So, you will have someone paying for a nearly full time spot, minus $10 a week, and only coming for 4 hours a day, except for fridays, where she is coming the full day? That sounds pretty nice!

It sounds like you are going to be getting paid more with the mom's plan--$125 per week vs $110 per week. Yes, there might be weeks where you have him more afternoons, but it would never be more than another $10 a week (with mom's plan) even if he comes the other 4 afternoons-$5 X 4 days would be $20 added to the $110 (in your plan) which would be $130. I assume you won't charge more than $135 regardless of how the extras add up--none school days, plus afternoons or whatever. So, with your plan, some weeks you might be making $130 if they use all of the afternoons, but most of the time you would only be making $110 per week. I think the $125 per week would add up to more in the long run.

It sounds to me that if you were going to discount the way you offered that you have nothing to lose taking $125 a week instead. Unless I am thinking about this the wrong way, it sounds like you are coming out ahead.

I would tell the mom not to broadcast the discount because if others find out, you'll have to go back to the original rate as you are can't afford to discount for everyone.

The discount I am refering to is only for the school year and she never had any question that she would pay full time rates in the summer. It was only a matter of will I execpt this dicount for a garenteed full time slot, rather than my option of a more dicounted rate for the school year but no garentee

No discounts for going to preschool. I offer it here, take it or leave it, but if you go somewhere else, no discounts here. In fact, I have thought about attaching a fee to this as it is a disruption to my day and my scheduled activities. This year is going to be the worse, 2 leaving in the mornings, and 1 in the afternoons, 3 days a week, grr, not looking forward to the disruptions of the day. Parents don't take into consideration how it affects our schedules. I will have to have 2 lunch times now to accomodate the 3 kids, more work on my part, and no extra pay....

IMHO, it's a better deal than possibly losing the child all together.

I would definitely ask her to keep your new contract price to herself. If anyone asks, which is none of their business, she should say she's paying the full rate, which she is for her.

I used to give 1/2 day discounts for preschool- not any longer!! I haven't been for about 4 yrs. now- if they want to take their child our for preschool, they are still taking up a full time spot. I can't fill in their spot with another child. It is a big hassle to watch for them to come home and for their ride. It's a big disruption during the day. I haven't done preschool children for about 3 yrs. now.
