Outgrow The Changing Table

Has anyone has a child out grow the changing table? I have another 4 yr old in diapers and just too heavy and big for a changing table so I wondered what everyone else does in this case. Also what can I do to help potty train this child. Routine does not seem to matter. It's hit or miss and they don't tell me when they have to go, I just have to happen to catch it or deal with the soiled diaper.

I just use a Yoga mat and roll it out in a room where the kids are playing. I have 2 and 3 year olds that are way too big for the changing table, plus there's no way I'm lifting them that high!

When I worked in preschools they used a nap mat like you buy at walmart and target (the tri fold red and blue ones) The plastic cover made it easy to clean it folded up easy after changes. I haven't had any that are too big for the changing table yet in my daycare but if that issue arises I will probably do the same. On a side note those mats are on clearance for $5 at walmart in the school supplies and they don't carry them year round.

I am wondering the same thing lately. I have a developmentally delayed 4 year old that recently started and she is kind of big for the changing table. I don't see her potty training any time soon either. I never used the thin changing pad that came with the table (always buy the thicker contoured ones) so think I might use that on the floor for her instead.

Have a question on this topic. When change the little ones diapers are we supposed to do it in the "daycare" room where all the kids are or can we do all the changing in a bathroom? I'm guessing we have to have on kids at every second right? Thanks!

I believe that a normal yoga mat will do the trick. Just make sure that they are not the one designed with holes in them or it will be a little harder to clean. There are a lot of nap mats also but some have a sticky feel to the material used which will make it a little hard to clean.

Just some simple mat will do if you do not really have an option.

You can also have the parents supply a non-absorbant changing pad.

A little financial motivation never hurt some home potty training...

At that age if he doesn't have any delays I would NOT be doing it on a change table, I would be changing him in the bathroom. It's less comfortable for BOTH of you and might be the incentive to HIM that he needs to shape up.... That's what I do with a 3 year old who pees fine in the potty but WILL NOT POOP! It's difficult but he needs to see where the poop is intended to go and be involved in the cleaning up process. At 4 years old there's no reason why he can't.

I stopped using changing tables as soon as the infant is able to roll. Even with me being right there using 1 hand to hold their legs and 1 to change the diaper, it's not enough if they get too froggy.

I went out and bought a nap mat for $5.00 at Walmart for diaper changes.

Everyone lays on the floor and gets changed. Less worry if they roll and easy to clean!

I ordered a 3" thick porta crib mattress from Amazon ($27.00'ish). It's perfect for my preschoolers.

I use the mat from my change table and change all the kids on the floor in the bathroom. Works great with kids of all ages.

I took a vinyl tablecloth and cut it into rectangles...this way I have extras and it only cost me $3 for 4 pads! Shop clearance!

I used to use the waterproof crib sheets (do they still make them?) instead of a changing pad. That way I could change them anywhere - on a bed, on the floor, etc.
