I'm glad you are all safe. As a native to southern California I've been through some wild earthquakes. And we are long overdue which is scary because I just plain don't like them big or some because you don't have much time to do anything....it's just wham!! here we go!

I read that there was also an earthquake south of Denver this morning, 5am (7aET). It registered a 5.3. Then to read about the 5.9 out there made me start wondering...

      Hope this helps.
Give a little love to a child, and you get a great deal back.

I am glad everyone is safe!

JenNJ....GOOD JOB following through with what you have practiced. It could have been worse and had you not followed planned emergency procedures, who knows what may have happened. I am IMPRESSED that you did it!!!!

Earthquakes??? Hurricanes??? Flash floods??? Mud slides??? Wild Fires???

Where I live, we get misquitoes and sub zero temps but none of that ^^^^^ EVER!!!

We practice fire drills. Just curious about what type of drills do you all seriously have to practice for these types of natural disasters? What sort of stuff are you mandated to have in regards to safety gear or survival items?

I do not know if I would say I was fortunate enough not to have felt it, but I unfortunately missed it. I mean, I would not have been scared even if I was just standing still while everything unfolded. My friends and I were in the car on the way home that time and we were just struck when the story was relayed when we got home.

We were at the pool when it happened

The water looked like it was boiling....

...Then they kicked us out and the phones weren't working. All I had brought with me was water....

                  It was unreal.

I'm in southern VA. The kids slept through it. The dog was calm as could be (she freaks out when it rains  ). I thought my blood sugar was lower until I saw the lights in the kitchen swinging.

I think mother nature has something against my area though. We have a swamp fire going, the earthquake and now Irene is on her way..

You forgot tornadoes. I'm not 100% sure where you live, but I suspect you at least do tornado drills?

We are required to and do practice fire drills and bad weather/tornado drills. Fire drills do get a little cold in the winter (and any advice to help speed them up would be GREATLY appreciated). We do storm/tornado drills in the summer. It usually happens that we get to go to the basement (for real) at least once in the summer, and I use that as one of our drills. Not necessarily a tornado, but strong wind thunderstorm enough to scare the kiddos.
