I had a family call me at 4:15pm to tell me they were going to be late picking up today because their car broke down this afternoon. My closing time is at 5:15pm and I am not flexiable at all, when I'm closed, I'm closed. Everyone is CLEARLY aware of that. It also only takes a max of 30 mins to get from one side of the city to the other.
So when mom called at 4:15pm to tell me they would be late I made up an excuse that we had a bank appointment that we have been waiting on for 3 weeks so I needed to get out of the door right at 5:15pm today. I hated the idea of just saying, "It's been a long day and I really want to be off when I'm suppose to be," so that's why I lied (I know I should not have lied). However, how do you explain to a person that when your closed your closed without sounding mean? When Walmart closes at 11:00pm you can't call them and ask then to stay open an extra half hour because you are running late and need something, right?
My reasoning was this family called me 1 hour before my closing time and hours after they knew their car was broke down to tell me they would be late. They could have easily called a cab to come get the kids or made other arrangements. I also don't have this family on my new contract so I can't charge them late fees being it's not in 'their' contract. The late fees would have been more expensive then the cab ride.
Did I do the right thing? How would have you dealt with this situation?
Thanks.
