Home Daycare In a Different Home

Do any of you operate a home daycare in another home (a second property for instance)?

That's illegal in my state as well. We need to have a certificate of occupancy. A friend of mine tried it a few years back....she wanted to use her childhood home which her family still owned. It was a no-go.

You have to live in the home in Utah too.

That is why my son is the named licensee of our day care. He lives in the house we use. However as far as the parents are concerned, I'm the owner of the business and I run it.

Here is another thread on the same topic
I am having thoughts of expanding and moving my daycare out of my home. People call weekly asking to me to watch their kids, Just looking for advice and guidance.

I'm not the "operater", but I work at a home daycare that's in a separate building from the owner's actual house. Connected property. Here in my state we can have daycare in a separate house than we live in as long as it is inhabitable. In other words, as long as someone could actually live there if they wanted (has to include a shower, microwave or oven, fridge, etc). Any specific reason you ask, BabyMomma?

If it were an option, would you...

either purchase or rent a house to operate in? Hopefully my questions don't sound to crazy ().

If I had a choice and the money I would do the daycare where I am now and get a smaller home for my husband and I within 2 blocks so I could always walk to work. Though ideally I would just buy my neighbor's house and connect the two houses using one for home and one for work.

It is illegal in Michigan as well. We have to live in the home that we operate the daycare out of.

Does anyone know of the reason it is illegal in most states? Just curious.

A daycare home operated out of your home and center is ran out of a separate building. There are a lot more things involved or "hoops" you have to jump through to get a center licensed. More qualifications, licenses, inspections, forms, etc are required for centers. If you want to run a daycare out of a separate building then you need to apply for a center license.
