    Telling A Parent "Good Bye"

    Hello,
My mother inlaw referred her co-worker to me with a baby and I've been watching him for about a year and a half. She is pregnant now and due in October. Originally I had said I'd watch the baby too but they are only part time. I'm only allowed 3 children and have decided to take in full timers only. Plus the mother is a pain. Also my husband just changed positions so he has a rotating schedule with days off during the week and said he would prefer if I only watched children 2.5 and older because it bothers him hearing babies cry. How do I tell them nicely I will no longer be watching them after she has the baby? I have already found replacements for them.
Thanks for any help, sorry its so long.

Maybe you could send home a termination notice stating that you can no longer meet the needs of this family?

I would have a hard time with this too. Maybe you can tell them that upon thinking about it, As of Oct 1st (or what ever date you choose) you will be changing your liscence to do preschool aged children only. (Or you will taking preschool age only) You have found that meeting the needs of your family and juggling daycare that this age group works best for you and the children you watch. You wanted to give them enough notice so that hopefully they can find the right fit for their family.

You can say that you have made some changes to your business and have decided to accept full time care only, and are specializing in a preschool age demographic, effective on suchandsuch a date.

My husband said the same thing. Say that I will only accept fulltime BUT what do I do if the parents say they are willing to pay the extra for full time because they are happy with my care?

Say that you are going full time AND doing pre-school only, this way it doesn't matter if she decides to pay for the full-time space, it's not like she can say "Ok I'll pay for FT and make my infant instantly grow". If your replacement(s) are starting before the baby is due and your'e worried that the DCM will want to stay until her baby is born then give her a deadline with her last day of care being the Friday before the Monday that the new family will begin.
