    A Place of Our Own

Has anyone ever seen this show? It is out of California and on public televesion. It is all about childcare and gives activitie ideas, art ideas, etc. I visited their website and will go back later to look at it better. Looks really neat. I jus can't believe there is a show about childcare. Wish I had a dvr so I could tape it and watch it without children. Time to dust off the vcr!::

I listened to the bully one today. http://aplaceofourown.org/video.php?id=26

It had a little meat in it. I liked the laidbackdedness of Ruth Beaglehole

I think they defined bullying pretty well ( a child or an adult uses their power over another person thru namecalling, intimidation, and physical might) but the caused by not so much: a child feeling out of power... not feeling good about themselves... it's usually a reflection of what they have watched and seen. It's not a natural behavior.)

Where it misses the mark is not fully discussing children that actually have very high self esteem. Children who ARE very powerful...children who have a life experience of exacting their will upon adults from infancy on. Children who are BATHED in the high of being powerful and have a big problem with the powerfulness NOT being accepted when they are in a group or a setting away from their parents. They ARE out of power and feel powerless BUT the power they want in the first place is unnatural and unhealthy.

Ruth talks about supervision and how that affects bullying. I like that.

I don't agree with their premise of talking out the feelings of the ones who are bullying and to some degree the ones who are bullied. It's a fine line where the adult can add energy into it to the point where what the kid takes away is actually the adult energy and the excitement of the whole scenario. I think it's important to train the adults to proceed with caution in how they verbally manage it with both the child being physical and the one who is the recipient of that.

We seem to latch on to complicating childhood and "adultizing" the process with how to manage untoward behavior. There's a LOT to be said about keeping things really small and to the point and move on so YOU don't bring additional chaos to the behavior.

They also REALLY avoided discussing how parenting styles can lead to bullying. There really wasn't much at all in the video about parenting. There wasn't much about adults being harmed by the aggression and the training needed for adults to actually manage the physical acting out when THEY are being bullied by a kid.

I think if you pooled center workers and home providers and asked them if they see kids who act aggressively because of low self esteem ore reinacting what they have seen thru violent screen time... OR see kids who actually ARE very powerful at home and want the same level of power in child care... I think there's WAY more of the latter.

Sigh... normal training approach. Talk talk talk AROUND it but making sure that in the end everyones feelings are intact, kids will be kids, snuggles and kittens in a bubble.....

It's a subject that can't be worked around. This week I'm assisting a center with their anti bullying policy for ages three to five. Part of what has to be included is the physical assaults to the ADULTS. Centers have to protect themselves from being sued by WORKERS being harmed by little kids as well as the kids.

                            It's pretty sad
