    References from Parents?

For the first time ever I have received a request from a potential DCP for references. Not a problem. But got me thinking, do you ever ask for references from your parents? Job? Personal? Previous daycare?

I've not perfected my bad family radar yet, and wondering if this could help or if it's totally off base to even ask for. I will not be asking for this particular person because I don't want to scare off the first potential client I've had in a month, but in the future.

Once or twice in my early years of daycare I had someone ask for references. I gave them a couple of the people that I either had in care at the time, or who had recently left. I did ask ahead of time if it was okay with the people I was using as a reference.

I have not had anyone ask me for any sort of reference for at least ten years.

Two of mine were personal friends. One worked with my DD, and the other two were friends of hers. I think I have the personal references on DCP covered ::

I give my references to prospective DC families but do not ask anything on their end. I do ask for their history with daycares but don't specifically check up on their stories. I'm pretty good with the bad family radar.

I've had a few bad experiences that could have been avoided if I had asked for references from the most recent daycare and the reason for leaving. One lady had her son in 3 previous daycares.....she turned each one in to DHS for various reasons......that were unfounded. unfortunately I found this out after I enrolled the son. The dad cornered me in my kitchen and said I should tell all the parent to beat their children like he does. I had kids there and I felt threatened. I called DCS on him and gave notice to the parents. Now.....I ask for references and call them unless it's someone I already know or I know someone who knows them very well. Just not something to fool around with in my book.
