Long story short...late Tuesday night I started having stabbing stomach pains and was up all night with those and fever. Yesterday morning around 4a I decided to head to the ER incase it was my appendix.

After a multitude of tests, including ct scan, turned out to be kidney stones and inflammed small intestine (ER doc is thinking it COULD be Crohns Disease). So I was on IV pain meds and now have additional meds for pain at home.

My husband stayed home yesterday to help with my girls and so I could stay open. I only had one family choose to come (I love my families). Yesterday all my families decided to stay home today to let me rest except one who just got back from vacation (this would be their first day back).

I emailed and texted dcm yesterday at 6p to tell her that everyone was staying home and that I still felt bad so if she could find alternate care that would be great.

I haven't received any response and she's usually good about texting and we had been texting earlier in the day.

Their drop off is around 7:30a/8 and I have scheduled a required follow-up with a specialist after my ct scans results yesterday.

What should I do? Send another text, put a note on the door or just leave for my appointment and assume they found care? What do you think?

I would do exactly what you said, send another text and leave a note on the door.

I agree send another text and leave a note on the door, your health is way more important especially if the DR thinks its Crohns Disease, my husband has crohns and so I know how sick you can get from it.

Ditto. No room for miscommunication if you speak with them directly. Given the circumstances they would be pretty jerky to not keep their child home IMO.

Texting and emails leave too much room for clients to tell us "Oh I didn't get it", or when we put them on the spot with something, gives them time to make up a lie or story, etc. On the other hand, I think that daycare providers who abuse sick time/days off (I am not at all insinuating the OP is doing this) find it easier to text about closing than actually calling and lying to a parent with their VOICE... somehow it makes them feel less guilty, or feel less badly about putting their parents out. Again, I'm not saying that the OP is doing this, but I do know that unecessary and habitual daycare closures are very common in my town (we have tons of inexperiences, CHEAP dayhomes). Also, it's difficult to READ tones... I have known several cases of parent/provider drama because somebody mistook what was written in a text, etc.

In short, personally, I think the only way to communicate in this business is face to face - and if/when need be, follow up via email/text or written notice. I would NEVER just assume someone recieved a text about me closing, and then leave a note on the door. Yes, your health is important - but so is your business reputation.


Why can't you phone these people??? I have home, work and cell phone numbers for all of my parents, all of my families are 2 parents homes and in five years I have never NOT been able to reach SOMEONE in the family via telephone... why are you not calling to confirm?

I'm not even 30 and I'm pretty old school. Haha. I don't even have a cell phone. But, if I did, the last people on earth who would have my cell number are my parents. I love my families, but I've seen how much drama and stress texting has caused... I don't want it!

None of my families or myself have home phones and we ALL communicate by text instead of calling in 99% of situations. I think it's just a shift in the times. I never close or make any other decision by text without getting confirmation from everyone.

For example a few weeks ago I was going to walk the kids to the park and keep them there until pick-up. I texted all 5 families around 2pm to make sure it was ok and had confirmations back from ALL 5 within 3 mins. They just prefer texting and so do I.

Mine are all like this as well. It's just a lot faster to text them all in once message and then get replies back from each vs. calling 6 families with the same information. As for them having my cell number, I don't have a landline and my daycare phone is a separate cell phone with texting enabled so they don't have my personal number and I can leave the daycare home when I'm not working.

sorry you have to go through with kidney stones! i've had to have laser surgery once, and shockwave once. usually i pass them without even feeling them, sometimes i can feel it travelling through the (urethra????) but once they get to the bladder they are painless.

if i feel my side getting sore, i just chug back lots of apple juice, lemonaide, or iced tea even. or i'll share a beer with dh. doctor recommended.

biggest thing is, to keep your fluids up, and constant.

my last kidney stone was 16 mm, the ones before that were 5 and 7mm. i was in so much pain the first time with the 7 mm getting lodged on it's way to the bladder, that i was throwing up and passed out on the floor. my kids explained to dh that mommy is sleeping on the bathroom floor when he get home from work.
