Severe constipation, when do you send home

I have a dck 4.5 who has been constipated for days, more than I can count. He does not eat a good diet at home and here will often forgo any type of fruit or veggie.

Friday, the child went home for vomiting. No fever, just threw up. I did tell the DCM that I noticed the child trying to go to the bathroom several times and perhaps this was the only way out..

So today again DCK is constipated and has tried to go several times. this last time the child went there was a small amount of blood and it took almost 30 min for the child to go. Also, this is not the first time taht this has happened. It happend last year as well with the same kid.

The kid feels better now, but still complains of a stomach ache. The DCP dont seem to care about his diet and really have no clue how to eat proper.
I did tell them he needed a lot more fruits and veggies in his diet, but both DCP said they don';t like to eat them either...
Would you call to have this child picked up. Child seems ok right now, only issue is that DCK still compains of stomach ache.

Is 100% able to particiapte in everything going on today.

I would not send home for constipation unless the child is behaving ill.

If she can fully participate in the daily activities it will keep until pick up.

If you supply snacks and lunches I would double up on fiber. You will never get non veggie/fruit eating parents to "see the light."

I am a little concerned that there was blood in the stool, but i am sure taht it was from tearning caused by all of the pushing.

I guess if the child is able to participate there really is no reason, other than the constant complaining of having a tummy ache

It may not be just from poor eating. My daughter had the exact same symptoms for years! She is 9, and was just diagnosed 6 months ago with Celiac's disease, which is an allergy to Gluten/Wheat.

I know you said the parents dont care, but if you could, try to push them to have him tested.

We went for years with drs telling us that my daughters constipation was from not eating properly, even tho I knew it wasnt true. And they told us her random vomiting was from acid reflux (which it wasnt). We saw three different pediatric general drs who kept telling us the same thing.

Finally I was able to get her to see a pediatric gastroenterologist who immediately suspected Celiac. A few tests later determined it for sure.

My daughter would have frequent constipation, tummy aches (which were from her body not liking the gluten she had just eaten), and frequent random vomiting, blood when she pooped (from straining and tearing).

I would suggest a trip to the doctor so they can xray his bowels and see if they are backed up. Feces are toxic and if he's bound up, he could get sicker and sicker.

Encourage the parents to take him in and get it checked out TODAY! If they can't today, tell them that you will gladly accept him into daycare tomorrow after he is seen.

My step son has issues using the potty and he spent 6 hours in the hospital because he was so far backed up! It's nothing to mess around with!

thanks for responding, My sister said the same thing. she is allergic to wheat and did not find out until after she had to undergo a very serious rectal surgery. After the surgery, she was still getting sick. Too bad her doc was not smart enough to figure out that it was just an allergy and that all she had to do was go gluten free. I felt so bad for my sister, but she is ok now..

I will bring it up to the DCM at pick up for this parent and ask them to see the doc about it. The little guy starts kinder this year and not sure how he will be able to handel all of the toilet time if he can't get it under control
