I actually encourage them to interact with me and stuff during the story. I ask questions about each page with some stories...I'll say where is the black cat? What does the boy have in his hand? Can you find a triangle? And it keeps them engaged in what we are doing. They have fun. If they get too excited I'll put the book down for a minute and keep them back on track. I keep it fun.
We work on "not interrupting" while someone is speaking - so for storytime, we work on not interrupting when I'm reading
However, my group is primarily 2s and 3s, so after I read the text on every page, we talk about the illustrations, make predictions about what's going to happen next, talk about "why" a character acted/felt a certain way, etc. I think it helps the children stay engaged in the book, and learn to interpret key cues from the illustrations and helps them understand the whole story.
I do stop through out the book and ask questions (I should have put that). I just have a few that will interupt on every page while I'm talking. Like they see a mouse on the page so one will start talking about the mouse and getting up to point to it, then another kids does, etc, etc.
I just wondered what others do, glad to see looks to be the same me for the most part.
