    sick kid with fever!

ok so i have a little boy that arrived at 9:50 am mom said he slept until 9am ok fine. about 10:30 i notice he has no energy. laying on the ground wanting to do nothing. take his temp under arm it is 103.6 on one thermometer and 102.8 on another. ugh! so i call mom, dad, no response. leave a message with both.
so 30 min later and still no call back from either so i call emergency contact which is step-sister 18yrs old. get a hold of her ask to give him meds. she ok meds but i feel weird having her come get him so i say ok i will try mom again.
give boy meds it's nap time and put him to sleep. still no mom. 1 hour later dad calls back and says oh yes give him meds. watch him for febrile seizure :0 yes i am for sure dad is out of town(state) no way he can pick up.
so nap is over it's 3pm and time to pick up kids from school so i pack him and the other kids up. pick kids up and go over to sick boys house. Mom is there cleaning soon as she sees me pull up she comes out. i tell her i have tried to call her but she never answered so i though we would drive by to see if she was home. he has been runing a fever all day and its going back up again!

so it felt weird but what would you do?? i knew she was home today cleaning that is why we drove over there. Do you think i should not have done that? thanks

first off you are way nice for keeping that kid all day, but also a little silly.
You should have allowed for the sister to pick the child up never put yourself in a postion to have that much liability on your sholders. You never want to keep a child that ill in your care. just like the dad said watch out for seizures.... OMGosh...how scary.

Being that you have permission to drive, i think you did the right thing. If the parents are upset about it, tell them that you don't have the permission to care for ill children.

do you have an illness policy?

Honey, if you don't have a contract with this woman it's time to draw one up. Sick kid - 1 hour tops! That is ridiculous that you had that ill child all day!

Mom was home? Cleaning? I would have been SCREAMING at her! That was a possible ambulance call. Do you have anything on record stating that the child has had febrile seizures?

Shaking my head - what a day you must have had!

That would be her last day at my house.

I can't provide care to children who don't have a parent available immediately. It's too dangerous.

She knew he was sick and brought him to you.

She didn't care that he was sick. She just didn't want to take care of him.

        She purposely refused your calls.

She doesn't care that you, your family, and the other kids have been exposed.

She is dangerous to her child, you and your family.

        Term her immediately.

I do have a contract but this is what my illness policy says:
          14. Illnesses and Medication:
If your child/children are sick during the day, I will call you and isolate your child until you arrive to pick him/her up. If your child is sick to their stomach and vomits, you must pick up your child as soon as possible. Also, if your child has 3 or more loose bowel movements within an hour you must pick them up as soon as possible. For both situations, your child cannot return to my care until 24 hours after the symptoms have cleared. I must also have a release form from your doctor stating that your child is not contagious.
No child in the contagious stages of a communicable disease may be accepted for care unless the child is the only child accepted for care during the period of contagion, or the other children present are not susceptible to the illness. If at my discretion your child is too sick to be in my care on any given day, I will not accept your child/children. (This is to protect the health of the other children)
If your child/children need to be given medication please bring it in the original bottle.

The 17yr old sister was asking her mother if it was ok for me to give the child meds! she seamed totally clueless!

I don't know if he has ever had a seizure or not. they didn't right it down in any of there medical forms i have.
I really think the only reason i didn't totally flip on her was i only had one other child today so i could keep up and keep him separate easily today.

yes i am going to talk to her about keeping her cell on her or with in hearing distance at all time. she has kept him home sick before no problem and always picked him up in an hour of him being sick every other time i have need him picked up. so this was the first time it ever happened. he is not coming tomorrow and i am going to ask about seizures Thursday if he comes.

Yes i can transport and all parents know this when they sign up and give permission

i don't know if he has had seizures before or not. they never said so and didn't fill it out on any of my paperwork. i will be asking if he come back on Thursday.

every other time he has been sick he was picked up with in 1 hour. Never ever had a problem getting ahold of this family before. always available by phone. never try and bring him sick and keep him home when he is sick. so this was the 1st time ever i have had a child this long sick.

the only reason i let it go so long was he was sleeping and i only had one other child in care all day today.
